Just be careful about what you read online. There's a lot of bad advice everywhere on the internet, obviously, so you need to be careful what you believe. A lot of people on this board keep asking a question until they get one person to tell them what they want to, and ignore the twenty people who told them something else.

And you should try icing that has some real butter in it, it tastes much better than pure crisco and artificial chemical flavors.

If you do a cake and somebody likes it, and they tell their friends, and THEY tell their friends....
There was an old commercial back in the 70s for shampoo where they illustrated something called "exponential marketing." A gal liked this particular shampoo. She told two friends. They liked it, so they each told two of their friends. As each friend told more friends, the screen filled up with more and more images of happy women with shining, beautiful hair all thanks to this shampoo.

Call it word of mouth, call it viral, call it exponential marketing - people telling two friends soon leads to your name REALLY being out there, good or bad.

2x2x2x2x2x2x2=128. Then 256. Then 512. Then 1024. Then 2048. Then 4096. And so on and so on.

I count on exponential marketing for my (legal) caking business because it works. I'm counting on some of the 50 people attending the party I'm baking for this weekend to really like my desserts and they may well tell their friends and family about them. If I can get another order from that party, that opens me up to 50 more potential customers, which may land me another order or two, which then opens me up to even more potential customers.

Whether you take the chance or not in an unlicensable state is completely up to you. Go for it, but understand the risks. The more people who know about your cakes, the greater the chance the health department could know too. Your name doesn't have to be all over Texas; one person in the health department finding out in your city/county is all it takes to run the risk of hefty fines.

What might be a better avenue is to look into renting kitchen space, perhaps by the hour so you can work fast and smart, and make the cakes "above the radar." You'd be able to advertise and get the word out and reach more people who deserve fancy cakes. Maybe even look into setting yourself up as a non-profit organization so you can help out those with lower income and take the tax and donation benefits of being a 501(c)(3).

Just a little food for thought.

Anyone but me think respectablecakes is yanking CC's collective chain - or trying to stir everyone up??

The posts on these threads are written, spelled, and phrased quite differently than their first posting starting yesterday.

For example from today:

i have been and my dad was a backery manager for 23 years and we felt sorry for people that cant spend 100 dollars for alittle special cake for their childs 1st birthday i'm not a greedy peron and i love to help people out if i can. but doesnt everybody deserve a beautiful cake for their childs 1st birthday?

And their very first post yesterday???

The easy way but time consuming would be make the bottom of the carousel cake of cake 2 small layers then use thin round rods to put the horses on and it would hold the top piece of it up which would be made out of cake. Make it like a cone shape put a flag on top. The horses when u put them on the rods make sure they r opposite from each other make on higher then the other. add a sled to add alil different accent so itll look like a real carousel. How to make it spin would be find a motor that has a screw or something in the middle so it will spin and put that on a board then put ur cake board on top of that. But the real problem would be finding a big motor that would hold that weight and keep it spinning. to decorate the outside of the carousel is just to get a pic of it offline and just go by that and add ur little details to personalize it.

Just wondering....

Both posts seem very similar to me in the quality of the spelling and grammar. Equally iffy... icon_rolleyes.gif

Do you have your answer? I've read the whole post.

You can't accept money in exchange for cakes under any circumstances in your state without a license.

You can get a license by finding an approved commercial kitchen for rent and renting that out - either by the hour or for a flat monthly fee - getting Health Department/Department of Agriculture licensing and approval for your facility, and then getting your sales and income tax stuff in order with the state and federal government as needed.

At that point, you can take money (or gift cards, or presents, etc) in exchange for cake.

I don't necessarily agree with the laws in your state, but they are what they are. And you must have a license to sell cakes.

Yes, you must have a license to do that in your state.

When you accept $ you're running a business. Period.

Unfortunately for us there's no way around it, legally. Go and get that license you can do it!! Just be prepared for a change of heart about the pricing of your cakes.

This thread just has me shaking my head. It's all over the place like a kid who ate a lot of sugar.
I'm pretty sure respectablecakes has the point now that she's not allowed to sell in TX, as well as undercharge.

Now marina7842731 I'm willing to help you with pricing out cakes PROPERLY for your business. Just message me if you are interested. Not everything you read is good advice on the internet.

Roccosmom -- welcome back. You've been missed greatly thumbs_up.gif
