I have been making cakes for family and friends for a little less than a year now and only charging for supplies needed to make them. I really just wanted the experience. Now word of mouth is out there and I have people asking me if I will make cakes for them. I have turned them down because I really do not feel comfortable making cakes without a license.

In no way am I ready for a storefront (I still consider myself a newbie) but I know that I have to start somewhere! I am researching a home based business in North Carolina so I can legally sale cakes. I guess all I am really asking for is any advice or things I should know from others who have also done this. Insurance, equipment that is required, who to speak to about zoning, etc. I also have rental properties and considered using one of those houses as the home bakery (really just to get away from the fam for peace and quiet ). Can this be done or is it a big no no?

I am the type to want all my ducks in a row and get an idea of what I am getting into so any pros and cons would also be helpful! Thanks so much for your help!

You can do any of this, all you have to do is check with your local zoning office make sure you can have the business in your area. If you have an HOA you need to ask them as well.
Then go to nchomeprocessing.com to read what is required for inspection. You should have liability insurance call your insurance co to ask for rates.
As for equipment you're allowed to use your home appliances for your business..
