Hi Ratio Shortening On Long Island?
Decorating By Rosey1120 Updated 19 Aug 2013 , 2:19pm by scwright
Are there any Long Islanders who know if I can purchase hi ratio shortening locally?
Thank you!
Rose
Thank you for responding, sweattreat! By cake store, do you mean a cake supply store or a bakery that sells finished cakes? I don't know of any cake supply stores here, other than the craft stores. Never thought to ask a bakery, we do have a couple of small ones here.

The Chocolate Duck in Farmingdale is the only place that I have found hi ratio shortening locally. They charge $12.99 for a 3 lb. tub. Although it's more money that purchasing it online, you save on the shipping costs. However, if you buy other things online, then it's worth buying the shortening as well.
The Chocolate Duck has a lot of supplies, but they are a bit pricey.
There's also a place in NYC called the NYCake shop that sells it as well, but I don't know the price. Of course, you still have to get into NYC.
Yes it is different. You won't get a mouth full of greasy frosting if you use Hi ratio.
Thank you all for your help. Just got home from the Chocolate Duck (I'm in Sayville so this was much closer then the city). What a nice store and the people there were very pleasant. Yes, msulli, it is a little pricey but when I checked the price on www.fondantsource.com it was 7.99 for a 3 lb. tub of CK (which is what I got at the Chocolate Duck) and then 9.62 for shipping so the 12.99 isn't really bad. I know the time and gas adds to the cost but it's also a nice place to visit to see what cake toys are out there! If anyone knows of another site that has good prices, I'd appreciate the info. Are any of you near Sayville?
Yes, I'm in East Islip so we are neighbors. I am always looking for local stores, but unfortunately I haven't found anything closer than Farmingdale. When I have lots of stuff I usually order on line. One of these days I am going to drive into NYC and go to NY Bake Shop and check them out.
If you ever need edible images, Stop and Shop in East Islip will make them up for $5 a sheet.
Thanks, msulli, that's good to know. I go to the Stop & Shop on Sunrise. I wonder if they do it also. I grew up in East Islip and my inlaws still live there!!
Thanks, again, for all your help!
Sorry, don't know how to edit my last post. I just realized the S&S in East Islip is also on Sunrise I usually go to the one on Sunrise in Sayville/Holbrook, next to AC Moore.
Long Islanders!!!
HI GUYS!!! If anyone is interested in splitting some bulk items from intercounty let me know! I just bought 50# box of sweetex (had 3lbs and thought I would need more... but of course, since I bought 50# of it, I didn't need it lol) and am like... wish I had someone to share with! It was only $1.75 per pound this way so it was WAAAAAAAY cheaper than going to the duck ($14.99 for 3#), but now I have an unopened 50# box of sweetex! Let me know if any of you want to divvy it up!
Even if nobody responds, I am so happy so see long islanders on here :)
Hi Jacki
I am also on LI but I bought some hi-ratio through Amazon thinking I would use it and still haven't. So sorry - can't help you - but thanks to you posting on this older thread I've seen some interesting information! And NYC Cake is a lovely field trip, buying or browsing!

I don't recommend NY Cake & Baking store, they are very expensive. there is a school nearby so I used to always run into students going in there and some of the professional bakers too like Toba Garrett until I found other places to shop and get my products cheaper.
