Satin Ice Fondant:
I had to purchase a small tub of black Satin Ice fondant last night because I ran out of black Fondarific fondant. I cannot stand Satin Ice fondant - any color - but that is the only brand that comes in black that I can purchase without having to wait for it to be shipped to me. The fondant dries very quickly, cracks everywhere, stinks (literally-it smells) and isn't so much black as a dark grey.

I also hate having several different colors of icing all using the same tip and not enough tips for one per color.

That is my rant for the day.

Smells kind of like play-doh in my opinion...I don't like it either.

Yuck! Never tried the black. I tried the white Satin Ice but I really didn't like the taste at all.

The taste is bad in my opinion too, but in a jam that is all I could get. I really wish supply stores in my area carried Fondarific fondant.

It's my understanding that the "Duff" line of fondant at Michael's is actually Fondarific. It's way pricey (unless you have a coupon), but maybe a good choice if it's an emergency

I have to agree with yall...I tried the Satin Ice and wasn't at all impressed with it...didn't like the taste for a start...have never tried Fondarific...will have to pick some up at Michael's next time I go to the city.

Well I'll just jump in and be the opposing voice here -- I use Satin Ice almost exclusively and have no problems at all with it. Customers like the taste (and frequently choose it over white chocolate fondant or MMF), I've not had any cracking or elephant skin or fading of colors other than when it dries it does dry one shade lighter. I'm sorry to hear you've had such problems with it.

Fondant, like with anything subject to taste, is going to be one of those things where everyone is going to have their favorite brand or recipe.

As for the tips, order some more, they're cheap. I have multiples of almost every tip. For ones that I use the most, I have up to a dozen each. Which is helpful when my DH is helping clean up and drops one of the floor and doesn't realize it until he's stepped on it. 350lbs of man will flatten a tip in no time!

I have always used Satin Ice for all my cakes and my customers LOVE it ? I guess you get used to using a certain product. All the pro's use it and seem to like it...good enough for them ... good enough 4 me !!

I think Satin Ice tastes okay. But it definitely smells like play-doh!!!! It was pretty off-putting at first, but it tasted okay, so didn't really make that big of a difference in the long run!

I did a taste test recently with 6 people. The results:
Satin Ice: smells like Playdough, tastes bad
Fondarific: tastes either okay or neutral taste
MMF: tastes good, the best of all 3.

None of the 6 liked Satin Ice. All thought Fondarific was okay, all thought MMF tasted the best.

At least now I know. It was my first time buying commercial fondant other than one small foray into Wilton when I first started playing with cake a few years ago.

I typically use Satin Ice exclusively for my mainstream orders. However, I was in a pinch tonight, and needed Black fondant for a graduation cake. I ran to Michaels and picked up a tub of the Duff black and, HOLY CRAP, it is delicious!!!!! I haven't worked with it yet (will be doing that in a bit) but it tastes sooo much better than vanilla SI (which I don't find offensive, but I wouldnt voluntarily eat it, either).

I use to make MMF but it was a hassel and a mess. There are some things I would rather buy then take the time to do myself, and fondant is one of them. I also had a really hard time rolling out MMF thin enough to cover a cake with. My husband always had to roll it for me. With Fondarific I have no problems rolling the fondant thin.

I like the options for ordering premade colors too by Fondarific. Makes by job even easier.

Choco-Pan makes a WAY YUMMY black!! Its chocolate based so that's what it tastes like!! Its a little bit stickier to deal with, I think because of the chocolate, but it works. And smells divine!!

No, I do not work Fondarific. I work for an engineering company designing burners for power plants all over the world. Cake stuff is just a side thing for me.

I make my own MMF in my KA, takes no time at all and everyone loves the taste. But if I need a strong colour (black, red) I use Satin Ice and I've received not complaints! To each his own, I guess.

Maybe it's the Satin Ice plastic bag that smells and it alters the perception of the taste? I should put a ball of it in a Ziploc and see if that changes anyone's opinion.

How long does the commercial fondant last once it's opened? I didn't see an expiration date on the tub.

There is a label on the tub that says once opened fondant will last in an air tight container for 1 year.

I can't stand SI either....the smell and the taste. The buttercream flavored Fondarific tastes great. However, I've had issues with the chocolate flavor-cracks and dries out quickly. Thus, I'm experimenting with Choco Pan right now.
