and I'm still a pretty new decorator. I'm thinking of this cake:

Would this work as a BCT or free handed best? I've never done either, LOL!

I want something that looks good that isn't *too* hard!

That link didn't work for me but I would suggest a BCT. I tried a Bratz cake freehand RIGHT! I was not very happy with it and next time I would do a BCT. Some people swear by gel transfers but I've never done one of those before.

The one in the link isn't a buttercream transfer because it uses the star tip to fill in the field. It's such a simple pattern it would be very easy to trace onto the cake.

Find the picture you want to use, print it out the correct size, cover with wax paper, trace the outline with hot glue onto the wax paper and let cool.

Then flip it over, place gently on cake (buttercream should be crusted) and trace the outline again with your finger or a small decorator's brush. When you lift it, there will be a slight impression of your pattern. Just outline with black and fill in with stars.

Piece of birthday.gif , right? icon_wink.gif It will be beautiful when you're done. Be sure to post a picture!

Oh yeah, you can use a gel transfer, too (see the Wilton site for instructions: http://www.wilton.com/decorating/basic/patterns.cfm )

I just don't like them as much because you have to go over the piping gel, and for me anyway, sometimes it shows.

QUOTE]hey, just thought i would give you a very easy and quick idea. for my cousins 11th b'day, i did a 3 layer cake. I first iced with B/C in pink then use the star tip all over.then i used that same tip to pull out the icig for the botom border. okey then i made a quick trip to Walmart. bought a $5 "Bratz cake w/acessories and placed down in the cake. w/the number eleven and the acessories. base your cake color on the doll colors. remove the shoes from the doll and she will fit very smooth. then fill in the hole around her legs w/icing. hope u enjoy, my guest loved it. e-mail if you get stuck!!!!
