You: "I am gifting so and so a cake to serve 50. It is a $150 gift for his shower. If YOU would like more cake, it will be $3 for each additional serving. How many more servings shall I make?"

Well, I guess I'm the odd ball here. I don't think she was calling the op or the cake cheap at all! I think that she just used the wrong word, of course I wasn't there, so I didn't see how the lady reacted to it. I would take it as a compliment (reading between the lines - the op's cake is so good that people will want more of it!) Of course, it's the OP's decision if she wants to make the cake a little bigger or not. More business? lol

Sorry, I just tend to see the good in things! lol

-- This cake is so (too) small. --

Better it is small so you can't add even more to your waist!

Really? Or is it your eyes and soon your waist too that are too big?

Really? I can see by your size you like to eat extra large portions.

Really? Funny, it will serve 50 normal people.

Really? Are we practicing up on the deadly sin of gluttony?

I like this one. icon_biggrin.gif

Am thinking the mother in law didn't mean it in a bad way.

Maybe they have raunchy guest that always expect to take something home (I know people like that believe it or not ) and she figured that if there wasn't enough cake for her guest to take home THEY would think she was being cheap.

I really don't think it was mean directly to the OP but who knows, there are some awfully mean rude people out there.

I'm thinking the MOB could have used a better choice of words, but how tacky would it look for you to slam her in front of friends & family at her daughter's shower? Plus that's 50 potential clients there who don't know about the comment. Take the high road and let it slide for sake of your friendship with the groom.

ROFLMAO!! Mrs. A, I just luv you! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Other potential responses:

"Well, if you want your money back....oh wait! This cake was FREE to you, wasn't it?"

"Cheap? I didnt' realize you had so many relatives who were bringing gifts worth more than my $150 cake?"

"I may be cheap, but you're an ungrateful b*tch."

Thanks for all the replies - some of them really made me laugh!!! I don't think I'll go with the more gutsy ones (even though I'd secretly like to!) and hopefully, she'll have enough class and tact not to make any more dumb comments. Maybe my stunning creation will silence her... lol!

Personally, if someone is bringing something free, than it's totally up to them to decide on the size. If I were throwing a shower for someone and a friend offered to make a cake, I would be grateful no matter how big or small the cake was (but that's just me). Then again, I don't know anyone around here who bake or decorates, so no one really understands the amount of work involved. Everyone I talk to thinks it takes a couple of hours to throw together a cake (okay, now i"m off on a tangent!)

Muggles.

Now I am LMAO IndyDebi! I actually said this to a friend once- only I stopped at the "Oh, wait..." She never said another word-- and loved her cake.

to be on the safe side, be sure and send a cake cutting diagram so that the hostess can see how to cut it to ensure that it serves 50.....

As much as we all want to make snide remarks at times like these I do think it is better to rise to a higher level than the rude person. I would probably just say something like, 'When I volunteered to donate the cake you said you were expecting about 50 guests. Did you wind up with a lot of extra people today?"

Since it's free (for them) they want a cake that serves 100 if they were paying they would make due with a cake that serve 20 just be thankful she's not your MIL.

I think it was terribly rude, whether she meant it to be or not. However, couldn't you just say something along the lines of I'm in the position to provide a $150 cake. If you want or need it to be larger, I'll have to charge for the extra?

My daughter's baby shower was in February. We had a Dr. Seuss themed shower. The cake was made by an acquaintence of my oldest daughter.
Anyway, the cake was half a sheet cake that was made to look like the cake plates. It was absolutely adorable. The woman did an outstanding job on it. It was supposed to be enough for 60 people. Guess what? We had quite a bit of cake left, not because it wasn't good, everyone had a nice big piece! They also had a nice lunch! Oh, and by the way, the cake cost us $300.00!!!!! I think it will be more than enough! I know, put up a sign. NO DOGGY BAGS!!!!!!! Also, maybe she should go do some pricing.
I think its very nice for you to do this. Never mind the pressure you'll be under to make sure its perfect. I'd stick to my game plan, and if she doesn't think it will be enough, suggest getting some fruit. OOOOR as the saying goes "LET THEM EAT CAKE"!! (or something else!)

FREE is just about as cheap as you can get. I hope she thought about what she said after you hung up. You should make the sizes you originally decided on.

Just tell her -
Madam *cheap* is when people expect 2 slices of FREE cake...
OR
[i]Madam not everyone NEEDS two slices of cake[/
Then just stare at her - she will get your drift.

Don't you just love MIL's who think its - *their day and their cake*

Have I been making the wrong size cakes? I follow the serving size on my wilton pan paper thingy (hehe, the paper that came on my pans) and it says a 10 and 12 would serve 57 and an 8 and 10 would serve 39. Is this wrong? Because if it is, I've been making a lot of extra cake......I'm confused....

Sorry that the lady got to you! People are just dumb and rude!

I had a similar type of situation a few months ago.

I made a free babyshower cake as my present for the mommy-to-be. I used a 6" and 8" cake and then made 12 cupcakes. It was plenty of cake for the amount of people that were there.

So I get there, and I'm carrying the cake and the father-to-be asks the aunt where the cake should go? And the aunt says, the big cake? And the new dad says, yeah. And she looks at my little cake and says, you mean the big cake? It goes here. And then he told her this was the cake and she just looked at it and said, sit it down there.

I was thinking - you have got to be kidding me! It was free, it was my gift to the new mommy, why should it be 4 tiers or whatever you had envisioned? When there were plenty of leftovers? Blah!

I had the same thing happen at a baby shower too.........I donated the cake (it was my best friend's cousin and my bff tried to pay but I wouldn't accept it)....I came in with the cake, it was a 12" round w/ baby blue fondant, fondant cutouts that matched the baby's bedroom exactly (sports balls, etc.) and gumpaste converse shoes on the top. The mother of the MTB scowled and was like........."Oh great, look at the cake...now I'm going to have to run out to walmart and get a sheetcake so everyone can at least have a piece of cake now!!!" I said............this serves 55 ppl. She said "THAT serves 55 people??????????? I said "yep, if you cut it properly it will serve 55 people" They had 20 people in attendance mind you!!! She ran out and got a sheetcake and nobody TOUCHED it..........not only that but nobody would even take the walmart cake home with them and they had a TON of the 12" round leftover and everyone was fighting over who got the extra servings to take home!

Some people just have these grand pictures in their heads of how big a cake SHOULD be and have no idea!!

How exactly are you cheap if you're donating the cake for FREE??? She's the cheap one. Tell her you'll provide the 50 servings for free but if she wants more she pays for each additional serving...

The nerve of some people I swear!

I say tell her if she wants a bhigger cake then buy the stuff and you will make it bigger and see what she say. At that point you will see who is the cheap one.

I was thinking the exact same thing, lol. I've never seen a party-cake serving chart that allowed that many servings for a 10/6. Wedding servings maybe. Is there a particular chart y'all are using? I usually go 32-35 servings for that size, which I do a lot. Have I been giving away cake lol???

It's very simple, if she says something at the bridal shower, you just smile and say, "you know, you get what you pay for" and leave it at that.

Butterfly, I'm thining that chart means for a single layer.

A 2-layer 10/12 serves 38+56=94 ..roughly half of that would be close to the 57.

A 2-layer 8/10 serves 24+38=62 .... roughly half of that would be close to the 39.

I maybe the new girl to the site but i have being cakes for 8 years. One thing i have learned over the years is that you can't get butter and sugar for free therefore i dont do free cakes, even when its family and friend. what i will do is take something off, by doing so people will know that you are for real. And on top of it im still paying back school loan. So stop doing free cakes and this will never happen to you again. Sorry for not getting back to alot of you about my cakes but i have being busy.
