So I needed violet fondant. I always colour my own fondant and never had a problem.
I took my cake out of the fridge the next day to discover that 1 tier was still violet and 1 had changed to blue. I know that blue is the under tone colour but shouldn't it all change? Not sure! I tried 2 other times and kept getting blue shades. Not sure if the colour was bad but it was new.
Any input.

It was a nightmare. Needless to say I made the cake white with violet flowers from previous fondant I had.

Purple and all it's derivatives, suck!

The only way I've ever been able to give lavender to royal purple is with my airbrush. I've actually dry brushed stuff as well, what a pain.

I don't know what happened, that your fondant changed colors. I just know that purple, lavender has always turned gray in my hands.

You are not alone.

I've had excellent luck with Chef Master No Fade Purple and Pink. I only use those now.

This happened to me too! The pink fondant I had went brown -- so gross! However, I also had purple on the same cake and it stayed the colour I wanted.

Uh oh. I have a cake coming up that requires vibrant, vivd, rich purple. Where do I find the Chef Master no fade stuff? Is it expensive? icon_surprised.gif

I've had teh same experience with Americolor. Squires kitchen and Wilton has stayed the right color. So if I need violet/purple I use them to be on the safe side

You said that the cake was in the fridge? The moisture in the fridge could posibly affected the fondant. I have had this happen to me with red. I put the cake in the fridge for a couple of hours because it was a fairly hot day, and when I pulled it out the pre-colored red fondant turned orange. icon_confused.gif

Thanks everyone! All good info.

Egensinnig - I also used wilton violet. But that turned royal blue. I didn't have alot of fondant and I used 1/2 the container. I tried again and it was looking the same way so I stopped. I have made violet before and never had this problem.

Nacnacweazel - I have done this before and no problem. icon_smile.gif

Thanks again everyone.

This happen to me once. I had a pretty pink bow, but the cake was in the sunlight for a while because it was an outdoor birthday party. This was when I learned that sunlight changes the color.

light is the enemy !!! I keep all my reds/ blacks, blues, purples out of the light !!! I wrap them in saran wrap, then cover in aluminum foil to keep out the light. IT only takes a small amount of light to really change the color quickly.

I have noticed that the color changes the most within the first two hours after coloring, and I have actually used light to change my color to get to a desired shade that I didnt have colors for.

Yeah, I just had to mix fushcia fondant a couple days ago. I get a good color, bag it, put it in an airtight NONTRANSPARENT container. Opened up the bucket today and guess what? Purple. Not a hint of pink in it, just purple.

It's happened to me too when using Wilton, Americolor & Creative Colour. I only use Chef master (when I can get it) & sugarflair the rest of the time.

I am also glad I am not the only one. I thought I was losing my mind recently when I made a very light pink cake with mauve flowers and purple butterflies. The cake was so pretty at home and then I delivered it and it had looked like the color changed. I thought it was because of the flourescent lighting, but this may have been the issue. THEN ... we cut the cake and the fondant that was under the second tier was the right color. Thank goodness I did it as a favor for a friend, but everyone liked the cake anyway and I was the only one that knew it changed color! UGH!
