I've had this wedding on the books for 2 months. This whole time I thought that the wedding was today at 2 p.m. I get a call from the groom this morning at 8:30 and this is how the conversation goes:

Groom: "Hi Ms. Tiffany. I was wondering what time you were going to be here to set up the cake."

Me: (I had a bad feeling as soon as I heard his voice) "What time is the wedding again?"

Groom: "10 o'clock"

Me: "You mean 2 o'clock?"

Groom: "No. 10 o'clock...this morning."

Me: "OH CRAP!"

Groom: "Is that a bad thing?"

Me: "Umm...yeah. I thought it was at 2. But don't worry about it. I'll have a cake there. It might not be exactly right, but I'll do my best."

So...I had to do 4 hours worth of work in about 45 minutes. Can you say CHAOS?! It was my first time doing any kind of quilting and stenciling work and I was literally sick to my stomach thinking about all that I had to get done. I just kept chanting to myself "you don't have time to puke, Tiff."

I got the cake to the reception site and on the table only minutes before the bride and groom arrived. Phew.

Lesson learned. ALWAYS VERIFY WEDDING DATES AND TIMES!!!

By the way...I just got a voicemail from the bride and groom and they were thrilled with the cake. Their message made me cry. Probably because when I wanted to cry earlier I couldn't and I had been bottling it in for the last couple of hours. icon_smile.gif

Wow!! Good for you pulling it off. I think I would have assumed a fetal position and just cried my eyes out!

I always send a confirmation email to my brides 2 weeks in advance once I've called the reception site to verify set up time. In my email I lay out all the details for the bride and wish them a happy wedding. I do this so they have peace of mind that everything is in order and to make sure I have everything correct.

Can you imagine if he hadn't called to check with you? Sounds like the kind of groom all brides should have! icon_rolleyes.gif

I think they changed the time and realized they hadn't told you so were doing a CYA by trying to sound like they were "just checking".

I never got calls from couples the day of the wedding (2 exceptions to the word "never" but special circumstances applied so those 'don't count' icon_wink.gif ) ... the couples were too busy doing wedding stuff and those who did confirm always confirmed a couple of days prior ..... not a couple of hours before the event.

Sounds fishy to me.

I agree with you debi, the conversation between bride and groom probably went something like this...

B: I'm so happy we decided to move the wedding to this morning, that way we can be celebrating our honeymoon that much earlier.
G: I'm glad everybody was okay with our change.
B: Me too...and by the way, thank you for calling the baker about it. I just had so much to do that really helped having you take care of that.
G: (silence)
B: What's the matter...you did call her didn't you?
G: umm....are you sure you asked me to do that? I don't remember you asking me to do that.
B: Oh my gosh...what are we going to do....we won't have a cake...my beautiful wedding will be ruined...
G: Don't worry, I'll call right now...I'm sure the cake is ready and what's there to be a big deal about delivering a little early...heck she'll probably be happy to have the rest of her day off anyway.
B: Just dont' tell her you forgot to call her...act like she should already know and she won't get mad at us...she'll think she messed up!
G: Good plan

And he proceeds to place the call. icon_razz.gif

katnmouse..I think you might have hit the nail on the head with that. icon_lol.gif I wondered when I read this thread earlier why the groom would be calling at 8:30 a.m. the day of the wedding.

Great point, Debi. From now on all wedding cakes will be done the night before. Period.

I did get a call from the groom's mother after the reception. She wanted to let me know that the cake was a huge hit and that they were extremely happy with it. She also said that I did nothing wrong and that it was the bride and groom's fault if anyone's. Her exact words were "anyone who knows my son knows that he walks around with is head up his rear most of the time. He's an airhead." icon_smile.gif

So many things could have gone wrong with this situation, but thankfully they've been very sweet about it.

I'm posting a pic of the cake, although I'm embarrassed to. You cake experts will see all of the flaws right away. The flowers were waiting for us at the site and were thrown on literally as they were carrying it to the table.
