Luster Dust on cookies

Hi! I will be making some cookies soon with white flood royal icing and bride and groom stick figures on a motorcycle with edible markers. She wanted red flood icing, but the markers won't really work well on top of that color. So we settled on white flood and red piping around the outside.

She'd really like the motorcycle to be silver. I can't find a silver edible marker, so I thought I'd try and paint on some silver luster dust mixed with clear vanilla over the motorcycle part of the drawing. Will this work?

Also, I have some Wilton silver shimmer dust. Is this the same thing as luster dust?

I attached a picture of my cookies so you'd all get a better idea of what I'm talking about with the icing/drawing.

Luster dust is not the same thing as Wilton's shimmer dust - the Wilton is more like a 'sprinkle-on glitter'. The luster dust needs to be mixed with a liquid and then painted on. In my experience with the cookies, and I glaze all my cookies first, the best liquid to use is Everclear as the alcohol content is so high that it practically evaporates on contact. Vodka also works, but if you need the dust really thin, the additional alcohol actually melts the sugar, and you can lose that nice smooth surface. I would caution you on using the dust over the edible markes, as it can 'dilute' the ink and then smear it thru your design. You would need to clean your brush often, which is time consuming and also wasteful when you see the amount of luster dust held in the brush.

I love your cookie designs! They are so cute and playful. I can remember spending a fortune on all kinds of personalized plaques and wall hangings with similar drawings - they were so popular and made great wedding shower gifts! LOL

I just painted some cookies this past week. Luster dust with almond flavoring. Another post suggested Bacardi 151. I have also heard the Everclear as stated above.

just wanted to say I LOVE your cookies...........do you use a projector for those so that all the cookies are exactly the same???? Or do you just freehand and allow the "hand-made" aspect w/ the little differences between all the cookies??? LOVE THEM!!

thank you! I use a projector... can't freehand for anything! Luckily my 13 y.o. son designed the stick figures on a motorcycle for these upcoming cookies, or there's no way I would have gotten the job! The bride and groom like it so much, they're using the design for their invitations, too! My son is so excited... his first paying gig!
