My mom usually insists on doing my birthday cake. I figure mom and dad aren't going to be around forever so let them have their moments like these. If Mama wants to do it, let her do it.

Last year was the only year since I was a child that someone else has made me a birthday cake.  If I want one I have to make it myself, and I usually do.

What a fun cake! How did you make the number toppers, are they just fondant "sausages" shaped into the numbers?

AI've never made my own birthday cake, but I did do my wedding cake a few days ago. What an ordeal!

BrandisBaked, Congratulaltions, post a pic of the cake when you can. I can only imagine what an ordeal that would be trying to make a cake and organize everything else.

AIt was an out of town wedding too, so I had to decorate and assemble a 7 tier cake in our hotel suite. Remind me to never do that again. ;-)

Dixiegal, I'm with you.  I'd let them do mine too if they wanted.

BrandisBaked, that is a beautiful cake.  Wow that takes some doing.

Thank you! They are gum paste, but yes, very good description of them! I just rolled long gum paste "sausages" and then curled them into the number shapes and let them dry. Easy peasy!

Thanks! I had to make a large number topper last weekend, and ended up cutting the shape out with my Xacto.. I'll try the Sausage Method the next time ;)

I really wish I had a picture. The last time I made a cake for my birthday (2010), that sucker was a hot mess. I was oh so clueless. Didn't know what a spatula was for, so I covered the cake with super sticky cream cheese excuse for BC using a butter knife *yeah, I know* then I sprinkled it with colored sugar to try to make it pretty. #fail. It was so hideously ugly (I used my dollar store baking pans, didn't even know to tort and level) and tasted like crap (it was some cream cheese cake recipe I found online that used the chemical tasting brand of cake flour known as Swans Down).

This cake was so hideous, it was partly the motivation for me signing up for my first Wilton course.

Ugh, I can still see the cream-colored atrocity in my head!

Every time I look at my beginner cakes I cringe! And I remember being so proud of them then! I'm sometimes almost tempted to delete the pictures, but then I remember it's a good way to see how far I've come! icon_smile.gif

AThe best part of making your own birthday cake is that you get to choose all the flavors! My birthday go-to is red velvet with a cream cheese buttercream and HUGE icing roses! Yum!

Hmm.

Oh. "Every time I look at my beginner cakes I cringe!" <Emily Litella>That's very different</Emily Litella>

Forgive me for thinking, for a moment, that you were looking down your nose at other people's beginner cakes.

I have no illusions about my own cakes. The rest of the docents were impressed with my Leland Awards cake, and even though it was a humble sheet cake, served in-pan, it still got nice responses on this board, but I knew that it fell far short of my design sketch. None of my cakes live up to my visions of them. But they've all been learning experiences, they've all been appreciated, and they've all been edible.

As much as I bake, my friends were shocked that I would make my own cake but I wanted to make something I wasn't certain I could, and I didn't stress one bit which made it totally worth it. Plus my friends loved it and I got a lot of free advertising!! :-)

AMy birthday is two days after Christmas, and we are always traveling. Last year we got home late the night before, so I had one day to shop for ingredients, bake, assemble, and ice it. I chose a complicated recipe using cream of coconut, and my mom looked everywhere for it. We didn't even get the cakes in the oven until 5. I made the filling and frosting, and then we went to dinner. When I went to fill it(3 layers, untorted), everything slid all over the place, and I barely got any icing on it. Cutting it was an even bigger disaster. But it tasted great. After that, I signed up for Wilton. This year I will make the cake in advance and freeze it, unless I get to go to duff's cake mix while I'm down in la over Christmas. But then I have to get it home

Rich's Bettercreme (note capitalization and spelling) is a commercial product usually not carried in an ordinary grocery store. I guess you can find it in big box stores like Costco, Sam's etc. I am in Washington state and Cash & Carry has it. It comes frozen in a carton (at least that's how I find it). You whip it forever (seems like). You can color and flavor it.

There are lots and lots of threads on CC about it. Just type "Bettercreme" into the search box at the top of the page and hit Enter. The results show (at the left) how many threads and how many posts there have been about it.

I have used a similar product called "Frostin' Pride," also found at Cash & Carry. My neice says it tastes like vanilla ice cream. It probably has a bunch of preservatives in it, along with who knows what else.

My birthday cake:  pina colada cake with pineapple cream cheese filling, coconut rum butter-cream, not flavors that anyone in my family would have bought for me ( if they could find this combination).  It was yummy and exactly what I wanted!

I think I've posted my 51st birthday cake elsewhere, but . . .
51st Birthday Cake

(DH spice cake mix, with maple-cinnamon BC and edible printing. 5 white candles in blue holders for the decades, 1 blue candle in a white holder for the single year.)

For my next birthday, I'm thinking of something involving playing cards.

53 will likely be a tough one. All I can think of is the old murder mystery riddle about the "53 Bicycles" (do your own Google search).
