My Success With The Cricut Cake With Pic And Tips!

I haven't seen anyone mention the DVDs that Carrie of Carries Cakes made. She's the TLC cake designer that provocraft used to promote the Cricut Cake. The DVDs have three TLC cake designers, including herself, taking you through using the Cricut Cake step by step. They give some great tips and even point out some trouble shooting tips. They do "plug" some provocraft items and some of their own that they sell on their websites, but still they are very informative. Just thought I'd point out another helpful tool to those of you still struggling.
Happy Decorating!!!
First of all I saw my local hobby lobby has the cricut cake for 199.00 what a deal.. they have frosting sheets etc for like 8.00 a package but are down to a few.
I downloaded a trial of scal and i see that i have to have a certain file type.. Can someone please please share with me how I go about finding those types of files onlline.. I am looking for a zebra print for my daughters personal graduation cake..
Thanks Staci
Carrie isn't near as good as Linda McClure. Linda invented the method and taught Carrie
I just ordered a Cricut (very excited, but nervous bc I'm investing allot and want to be sure I made a good decision in buying one) and I'd love to save this thread so that I can refer back to it, but I don't know how to do that. Would someone please explain to me how to save this? THANKS!

I have a Cricut Cake and LOVE IT! ...BUT after Provocraft sued the makers of Make the Cut and Sure Cuts A Lot, I am slightly angry at the company. I have cartridges and use them periodically, but not everything I want to cut is on a cartridge. That's where MTC has come in. MTC recently settled with PC and are no longer selling copies of their program with functionality to cut with the Cricut Machines. PC recently filed a suit against SCAL for similar reasons and the theory is that they, too, will settle and discontinue selling programs compatible with PC products.
That being said, I already own MTC and will sacrifice new cartridges and updates to my Cricut machines and MTC itself and continue to have the ability to cut.
Someone asked where to find files to cut with the 3rd party programs and a website called letteringdelights.com now sells SVGs, the file that is directly usable with the program, however, these are copyrighted, and can't be used for things you sell...unless you buy the commercial license. (I'm not sure they have these for SVGs yet.)
You can also google images and once you find one that is not copyrighted, you can "Pixel trace" it into your program to cut.
You can, however, easily create any file you want from scratch with MTC or SCAL. I have even drawn things in Paint and "pixel traced" them into MTC to make a cut file.

THANK YOU!!
So- I went to the MTC site- and it says they no longer support Cricut- I'm about to purchase one a cricuit- is there another product like MTC that will work with it, or should MTC still work?
ProvoCraft is going after all the software companies. I suggest getting the silhouette from Linda McLure. It will work with Make The Cut and comes with a special blade for gumpaste/fondant and a CD of patterns. It's a great machine and you don't have to buy expensive cartridges.
Sorry I asked! If I had clicked back one more page I'd have seen the discussion on the MTC. I was able to get the circut cake (nib) with 2 extra cartridges, 2 extra cutting mats, the tool kit and 3 sets of the sheets for $240 from Hobby Lobby - they were closing this out!
Now I'm kinda having a smidge remorse! At the moment, I won't open it. I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake and buy the wrong thing!
You'll be limited as to what you can cut as you'll only be able to use the cricut cartridges.
Eureka! First attempt (first one I kept anyway) this was pretty tricky as the font was very narrow. So first night of using it, but about the 10th cut.
I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, warm climate, high humidity, and found I didn't need to freeze the fondant prior to using. I did let it sit for about 10-15 mins on the counter to harden a little though.
Cut on the Cricut Cake Mini, high pressure, medium speed, tylose mixed in. Bit rough around the edges, I did clean this up afterwards with a paintbrush.
Wow, thanks for all the tips! I got the cricut for my birthday so I am looking forward to actually getting to play with it soon
Shan...
Hello. Do you know what version of MTC you have? I went to the web site and Make The Cut and it is no longer compatible with CRICUT :(
I have version 3.2.1. It doesn't support Cricut anymore due to legal reasons. I have to make sure that I don't update my MTC or else I will lose compatibility.
What a shame for all of us.. I can only assume my CRICUT CAKE is recent ???
What is the GYPSY used for??
AI was so excited when i got my cricut cake...but i have only used it once and it was a disaster. I can't wait to tr I can't wait to try again. Your cake looks great! :)
The gypsy is a hand held device on which you can design your work anywhere that you wish to take it. You can use it to merge images from multiple cartridges and also design your work in several layer overlays, which correspond to different mats when you cut. You can also preload all of your cricut cartridges on to it if you want to so that when you are ready to cut out your work all you have to do is plug the gypsy into the cricut machine instead of having to load in all the different cartridges that you might have used in your design. It is similar to Design Studio but has the advantage of the overlays.
Cricut now offers a site called Cricut Craft Room, which is a free online version of the gypsy and Design Studio. Using one of these programs gives you the advantage of being able to size your pieces precisely for the size of your cake.
Cricut Craft Room offers free weekly cuts that come from different cartridges so you get to try without buying.
Like any new toy the cricut can take some getting used to. I use a gumpaste recipe by Linda Mc Clure that I found on line and this works extremely well if you roll it on to your mat, place in a plastic bag and let sit for half an hour or so (even a few hours).
Good luck. Any other questions give a yell, I am happy to try and answer them for you.
This cake was designed on Design Studio on my computer while I was at a branch meeting for my local cake decorating club.
As you can see I was able to make the decorations to the exact size that I required, without any guess work. This is a fairly simple design but I needed something fairly flat to post to the other side of Australia.
This cake was made with elements from more than one cartridge and I also added presents etc made in a silicone mould. Once again, sizing is extremely easy on the computer programs and it is easy to overlay elements to see how they will work together.
AFabulous work !!! What brand frosting sheets did you use? I am under the impression that gumpaste is too hard to eat. Is that correct?
We are now carrying new Pearl Luster Sheets that work wonderfully with all cutting machines. They joined the rest of our line up of colored sheets that we have as well that are made specially for cutting!
I don't use frosting sheets with the cricut I make up the gumpaste recipe that I found posted on line by Linda McClure. I generally run it through a pasta machine to thin it quickly but if I need it bigger I will place it on the mat and roll it wider. I do freeze the paste in smaller lots and just pull it out as needed.
AWow! Amazing! Thats so funny I just posted something asking how people rated the machine and your pictures are flawless! Those cuts are so pre stein!! Very impressed
AHello fellow baker ! Would you happen to know which SVG site you used for the wrappers?? I am new to Cricut Cake and just purchased the Sure Cuts A Lot that uses svg files... just not sure how to find them???
Thanks & HAPPY NEW YEAR

As far as I know the newer versions of Sureou will Cuts a Lot do not work on the Cricut machine. The same with Fairy Cuts. Cricut took these companies to court and sued them and unfortunately won. I have older versions of both and make sure that they do not get updated. I could be wrong though, you will know when you try it. Cricut does have a cartridge in their 'Lite' range that has heaps of cupcake wrappers and also some of the other cartridges have them.

After playing with my cricut cake I finally think I have it down. I thought I would share a picture and some tips for some people who have got theirs or will be getting it. I used wilton fondant with some gum tex added when I did mine and covered the cake in satin ice. That is all that I have tried but since I found that feezing it made the cuts cleaner I am thinking any should work. So here is what I did when I made the cake in the picture.
1. I applied shortening to the mat with a pastry brush, then rolled the fondant directly on the mat to a little thinner than a nickel, it doesn't have to be a perfect square or fit the whole mat, because when you go to cut you can move the blade to a starting spot and you can learn that in the cricut directions. Then I trim the edges where the fondant rolled goes over the lines on the mat so the roller does not roll over it, I didn't trim well enough the first time and some fondant rolled into rollers on the sides.
2. Put the fondant in the freezer for 15-30 minutes depending on how big of section you plan on cutting I found if I was just cutting a small piece less time, a larger piece longer time since you will be cutting longer it will thaw faster. Also freeze longer if the cut is really intricate.
3. Then while the fondant is in the freezer I go to the cricut and set it up to what I want it to cut so that it is ready right when I get it out of the freezer book marking pages in the cartridge book helps it go faster as well as writing down page numbers for what you want because letters are hard to find and so on. I found setting pressure on high and speed on medium worked best for me.
4. Take the fondant out and cut right away and try to go as fast as possible. I found that after it is cut and it thaws that it was just fine, also check your blade often to make sure it is clean. The fit to length button will let you set the image to how wide you want it to cut, I over read that when I was reading the book and that is really helpful especially when doing borders!
5. I decided on using Make the Cut for the program to use and I think I will be getting Design Studio as well It is easier to design on the computer than on the cricut itself. Make the Cut also has a wonderful forum on the Make the Cut website, so far it seems very easy to use and is on sale right now.
6. I aslo used the cricut cake with paper and cut some cupcake wrappers using a deep cut housing blade and the mat used for paper and they came out perfect. You have to have make the cut or a similar program in order to cut any files on the cricut. You can find all sorts of svg files on the internet and then you can just open them in make the cut and cut them on your fondant or paper! A great place to buy a deep cut housing blade is ebay and the mats are at walmart for like 12 bucks for 2.
7. I think I will be purchasing more mats for the cricut cake so that I can roll more that one color at a time and have them all in the freezer so then I just have to take them out and cut and that will make it go a lot faster.
I hope this is helpful for someone, I have only tried fondant and so far freezing it has made a huge difference, I wasn't doing that at first and was very discouraged. I haven't tried gumpaste yet but will be giving that a try soon.
