I just received my Cricut cake in the mail.. and I have never used any of the other Cricut machines... How did you get the cricut to spell out other wording other than what is preprogrammed on the basic cartridge? I need to cut out " to a new beginning" .. it doesnt give instructions in the box on how to simply type out phrases. Do you know where I can go online to get a quick rundown on all the features... Thanks for any advise you can share!

Go to your little booklet and you will see different shapes have different letters. The shift key will allow you to select that. You will have to spell out the whole phrase you want to cut.

So many great tips! I can't wait to try it when my cricut comes tomorrow.

Some of you said it is possible to cut paper on it as well? I would love to cut out some cute little cupcake holders. I am really new to the cricut, how do I do that? Do I just need to change the blade for the deep cut bade used for the expression and use the sticky paper mats?

Hi Cakers,

So I bought the flexible chopping mats to try out on the cricut cake and it WORKS! woo hoo *happy dance*

However, I got a 12 x 15 and the measurements are precise and on point but the Cricut Cake 12'' x 12'' mat isn't exactly 12'' x 12''. It's 12'' x 12'' plus a bit more for the rollers. I sooo didn't think about that so excuse me please for realising this now.

Solution: flip the board to the 15'' side and trim it to the size of the cricut cake.

So if you get the flexible mats, you'll have to hold the mat into place while it's cutting or else it wiggles wherever it pleases.

On another note: HELP! my cricut cake last night decided to make a noise that I didn't like at random times. The belt quivered and you can hear the machine rotating loudly without the blade housing moving at all.

Also, my edges are still coming out a bit rough and I always have to clean off the edges with a brush etc. Is it always like that or do I need it to dry longer? Any suggestions??

I dislike the part of leaving it out to dry because eventually the fondant/gumpaste becomes way too dry to even re-use.

Thanks for all the help! icon_smile.gif

Have you changed your blade yet? That happened to me when it was time to get a fresh one. I don't about the "sounds" yours is making, you might want to contact the Cricut site. Sorry

Thanks for the tip on the flexible mat. I bought a package, but haven't had a chance to try them yet!!!

Change the blade already?? But I just sorta got it and didn't use it that much icon_sad.gif I'll contact the site. Thanks.

I'm really glad that the flexible mat works. It's really an expense saver.

One more question:

If I'm leaving the fondant/gumpaste to dry to allow the patterns to be cut properly how am I forming the the flowers to give them movement? Am I drying it out too much?

What's the "ideal" feel or touch to the fondant/gumpaste to give me the optimum use?

That is a hard question to answer - I go by feel. It is firm but not stiff. I test the corner - if I can lift it without it really bowing or "mushing" in my fingers it's about right. If it bends or cracks it is to dry. Does that make any sense? You should still be able to form the flowers, but slowly. How much are you "forming"? The underside will be smooth because of the Crisco. You could try rubbing Crisco on the top if you are worried. This is one of those "trial and error" things I think. icon_smile.gif

Hi everyone,
I'm probably a bit behind everyone on here but I made a breakthrough with my cricut this week, I needed to cut out some dragons and after getting it out setting it up I realised I didnt have any veg fat (crisco) to put on the mat. as I really needed to get these cut out I decided to improvice and had in my cupboard a bottle of again and again cooking spray, it basicly rapeseed oil in a pump action bottle, it says it can be used for baking trays n pans so I gave it a go. I sprayed one squirt and then spread the spray out with my pastry brush. its brill, the fondant stuck to be cut but pealed off without anypart of it sticking, a problems i had been having before. anyhow thought Id share the idea, try it out see if it makes things easier.

I went to Make the Cut website and it gives a rundown of all the features of the program. The very first one is in bright red and says:

Works with all Cricut machines (that has a line drawn through it) and then beside that it says: We no longer support the Cricut

So....does that mean this program won't work with the cricut anymore? icon_confused.gif

Cricut has sued Make the Cut and is no longer compatiable with the software. They haved also recently filed agaist SURE CUTS A LOT. There are a few threads on here about it. As of right now you can still get the Sure cuts a lot software and it is compatable. If you are thinking of getting it, get it now otherwise your options with the cricut will be limited to the cricut cartridges.

I love cricut and have found that rolling very thin and freezing works with GREAT success, I have gotten some very intricate patterns beeautifully! If you have any questions or need some help, feel free to ask me... although I am new to the SCAL software as I just got it!

If you do end up buying SCAL, you should probably check if PC won the lawsuit against them before doing any future firmware upgrades. I bought MTC and I won't be doing any upgrades from here forward incase it blocks the software from working. Your other option is cricut design studio, I'm not familiar with its features though.

Whatever you decide, have fun cricut caking!

I've been looking at them on Ebay and although I've bought many things from there, buying this off there makes me nervous for some reason lol! I guess it's cuz off all the problems people have had. I found one that is a Buy It Now for $300 + $12.95 S&H that includes:

· Cricut Cake Machine

· Basic Cartridge

· Cricut Elegant Cake Cartridge

· Cricut Birthday Cakes Cartridge

· Cricut Holiday Cake Cartridge

· 12x12 Cutting Mat

· Cleaning Brush

· Blade

· Instructional DVD

· Cartridge Plug

· User Manual

That would be an awesome deal to me because it includes 3 of the other cartridges but the catch is the seller doesn't accept returns....my luck it would be a dud! The seller has 100% feedback but it's only as a buyer...they have no feedback as a seller! Decisions....decisions......aghhh!! lol

Kathie I would love some tips. I'm desperately trying to get the cricut to cut out the filgree patterns for a side design on a 3 tier cake I want to do. just keeps going jagged round the edges. tried leaving the gumpaste to firm up but it made it crumble round the cuts. is driving me nuts again as I really want to do this design and its not happening. I'm in the UK so my sugar products are different. thank you icon_biggrin.gif

allaboutcakeuk , I just cut a bunch of intricate lace patterns out, for my dd's wedding cake. It's sounds like you might have let it dry out, a little to much, if it is crumbling. There is a balance, not to soft, not to dry, but you are almost there!! thumbs_up.gif

I got the same result when I tried letting it dry. Instead, I have found if you roll it very thin, like you were making a rose, then freezing it for about 15 minutes, then making your cuts, removing the excess fondant, then putting it back in the freezer gives me the best results. I get clean cuts every time. By putting it back it the freezer after you make your cut it makes the fondant less delicate when you are transfering it onto your cake and easier to work with especially for filigree, etc. HTH !

I have the MTC I was lucky to get it before Provo Craft sue MTC. so if you have the cricut cake or the expression now. you won't be able to use MTC. but if you own any other cutting machine you will be just fine.

I am thinking about buying a Silhouette machine better because you dont need to purchase all those expensive cartridges.

good luck

Thank you I'll give that a go I'm so determined to get some intricate cuts out of my machine. I was wondering whether to change the blade to the deep cut housing? Also what pressure/speed do you put those on please?

thank you

What gumpaste are you using and how thin are you rolling it? Check out Linda's youtube videos and you'll get perfect cuts every time IF you follow her instructions http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=silhouette%20%20electronic%20cutter&search=Search&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&spell=1 (making gumpaste and working with gumpaste)

Hi I'm using squires gumpaste - it does dry quite quickly and is fairly firm. I had a look at those they are pretty good I did give it a go but the edges were still rough.
