Sorry all, but I had one more question to throw out there. Does anyone have opinions on which program is better...sure cuts a lot OR make the cut? I would love to hear opinions before I make my choice.
Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

I have the scal and it works well for me, it was easy to understand once it was told me. I'm not a good follower of directions I have to see. There are tons of tutorials on www.youtube.com just google using scal and tutorials will pop up. There are lots of FREE scal svgs also I don't know if make the cut uses the same stuff???? So much to learn computers and cakes. What I want to know is one time I can cut something out in fondant and sometimes in gumpaste then at times NOTHING cuts it's sooooooooooooooooooo unstable. No consistancy.

Debster,
Thanks for the info. I did graphic design/computer graphics before so this is just going to mesh with me. The learning curve will be in the prep of the fondant and gumpaste and the fact that I am so impatient does not help anything!
As far as the 2 programs go, I guess what I am really trying to find out is if they do exactly the same thing? If there are more capabilities in one or the other then that is the way I want to go because I see the prices are within dollars of each other.
Thanks and keep on cutting!

Yes it does that! The lady that demonstrated at Michaels said to have extra on hand and rotate them. The cut does show thru on frosting sheets. If it didn't cut the mat some I don't think it would cut the fondant or whatever clean. I used Fondarific and it only worked for me if I added tylose or froze it. Did anyone have trouble w/it getting sticky? What is the difference between tylose and gumtex other than it is different companies.

I have SCAL 2 and really like it. I have used it to make so many designs. Even my own cupcake wrappers. I have good results using satin ice fondant with some tylose added in. If you want to make more delicate cuts then you need to roll it thinner. I have a number of cakes in my pictures using the cricut. Also with SCAL you can use any font you can find on the internet. I have downloads a ton of them for free.

Suzi;

I am hand rolling my fondarific to about a 1/16th of an inch (I can see the circles through the fondant). I am not putting it in the freezer, when I tried it this way, it did as you described. But I think that is because the weather here is hot & humid and after a couple of minutes out of the freezer the fondant gets sticky. I roll it out, put in on the mat, then roll it again to fit the mat. ( that way I can get it thinner.) Then I let it sit for about 15 minutes to get firm. I am using med pressure (3) and med (3) speed. Yes the mat is getting cut, but that is common, it says in the book it will need to be replaced in 25 - 40 cuts. (which I probably have hit already!) I just rolled some out, so i will make some cuts & try to post some pictures.

Karen,
Thanks, I actually realized I was using fondx not fondarific...will see if that makes a difference. I will try rolling thinner. But I am nervous about letting any of that stuff sit for so long it seems like I have a 5 minute max before I start getting crusty with any of the fondant and/or gumpaste I have tried so then when it cuts it cracks, wrinkles, pulls ect. But I will give it a shot...I'll leave out the freezer step and it is raining here today and is humid as well so maybe it won't dry up so quickly - I do not have the air on yet either as I know at least with my experience that it tends to dry my fondant rather quickly if it is on.
Also I had asked the question about the graphic programs...sure cuts alot and make the cut. Do you use either of these?

Suzi;

I don't currently have either program. I have watched the youtube videos, but I'm not sure which way to go, yet. I know both will work, but I want to make sure that they are upgradeable and will be compatible with my lap top or PC in the future. I had a bad experience with embroidery software (exactly the same thing but for my sewing machines) that would not upgrade, so I am left with a PC that is still windows 2000. (strictly for my sewing machines) If it dies, I am out of luck!! I don't want to get in that situation again.

I am trying to post some pictures, but I am not doing very good!

Here (I hope) are a couple of photos of what I just cut. Notice the mat, you will see several cuts in it! (and that is all just getting to know the machine!)

It's normal for the mat to get embossed with the cut it doesn't effect the use of the mat you just have to replace the mat when you feel it needs to be but I have made tons of cuts and I don't think it effects it that much and thank god mats are cheap! This may sound weird, but I think after it has gotten embossed some it seems that the fondant cuts better like having the mat have the grooves holds it in place better, I might be crazy though, lol

I feel your Pain! icon_cry.gif

I have to keep my old desktop running windows 98 to run the embroidery program for my Huskivarna 1+ . I actualy went and purchased the cheaper brother p150 just to be able to use the smart box embroidery transfer system. Now I am stuck using 2 embroidery systems .

Everytime I get a new cake Toy/Tool my husband points to the sewing room and just shakes his head! hahahahahah

JamieAnn;

I guess I am glad I'm not the only one who got stuck with software that would not upgrade, but I am sorry for you! That is why I am taking my time, reading, and doing a little more research before I decide which to buy this time. I think the SCAL 2.0 might be the way to go.

I'm waiting for mine!!! Ordered on Walmart.com for $290 plus tax, no extra cartdrige...but may be later I'll order it....

I've been searching online about both programs,and I read that with SCAL you still need another software to convert files to SVG's and with MTC you can convert them....I'm thinking about getting MTC....

With SCAL2 you don't need toe extra program like you did with the original SCAL. I have used the original SCAL and SCAL2 with the Cricut Cake.

I made this cookie last night with the cricut cake. It cut the dough and the fondant perfect. The cookie dough need to be frozen to have a clean cut. I used wilton fondant and that was cut perfect. Next step is going to have to learn SCAL to make other items not just what cricut has.

Thank you. They were 1/8 inch high they were just thick enough to go thru the machine. I wish they would have made it higher to make thicker cookies but they were fine. Not to thick and not to thin.
