This video shows you how to brush embroider a cake and it is very helpful. icon_smile.gif

If the link doesn't work it is on You tube and it is called "Impressing a pattern onto your cake and brush embroidery." I never thought to do the royal icing imprint that is genius! icon_smile.gif
Enjoy!

I am a big fan of Elaine MacGregor-- her you tube videos are great-- and I love that accent!

Thanks for sharing that, Jen!

I wonder if that impression technique would work for my upcoming cake. I'm making one for a friend's bridal shower and she wants me to write on it, "Blessings on your new life together, Lauren and Andy" I'm terrified to try that much writing, getting the spacing right, etc. It'd be great if I could print out the writing from the computer, pipe it in royal and let it dry, then imprint it onto the buttercream and pipe over it with BC.

Does anyone think that would work? I realize I'd have to pipe the letters backward in RI for them to be right-side up on the cake!

Okay, well I just wanted to report that it didn't work on my first attempt! I printed out the message and piped it backwards onto glass with RI a week ago. When I went to imprint the cake this morning, the glass messed up the frosting. I can't figure out if I just pushed too hard, or maybe I should have overpiped the RI 2 or 3 times so that it would stick out farther from the glass, then the glass wouldn't even be near the cake as I imprinted it.

So, I had to free-hand pipe that looooong message onto the cake. Luckily, it turned out okay!

JGMB
I used wax paper and then I piped the royal onto that. It worked fine. The Royal cracked in a few places but not enough to change the look.
But I think you are right that you would need several layers of royal on the plexi-glass.

Great video mellormom - thanks for sharing that. Never would have thought to: 1)brush two colors at once, and 2) dust over the dried RI with dry dust!

On her latest set of dvd's, Sharon demonstrates how she prints out a message, right side up, pipes it in RI, allows it to dry, and gently lifts it onto the cake. That way, you can use any font you want, and adjust it to any size you want. Instead of using the RI to make an impression that you pipe over, you just pipe it out to put onto the cake. But you have to make LOTS of extras because they are so fragile. The thing to do, though, is to pipe LOTS of "Happy Birthday," "Best Wishes," and "Congratulations" messages...you can store them and use them any time. And you don't run the risk of damaging the surface of your cake while making an impression. You just attach the messages with a little thinned BC. I love doing it this way because my piping (writing) is CHICKEN SCRATCH lol!
