Are we supposed to have cake boards underneath each tier? I know I have to use dowels underneath, but it does make sense for me to use the dowel unless there is a board in place.

Please help! Thank you!

Yes, each tier should have a cake board.

Yes, of course you have to have a board under each tier the same size as the tier. You can't dowel without the boards or you'll just have tiers that slide down spikes.

sharpen the dowel with a pencil sharpener. with a little pressure you can put a center dowel through your tiered cake.

Each cake still has a cake board but what they do is pre cut a hole in the board and cake.

Do you wrap each cake board, or do you use a foam core board that isn't wrapped. I mean with foil or something.

i tear out a sheet and press one side of the cake board to it firmly. then i trim the excess off. i repeat on the other side. so i guess i'm not technically wrapping it since it doesn't go over the sides ...

i haven't experienced cutting the cake where it tears the press n seal underneath, i wouldn't worry about it.

I use uncovered foamcore that I've sanitized with clear drinking alcohol (gin, vodka, everclear, rum). I prefer not to have to worry about foil or saran or pressnseal coming up when the cake is cut.

I wrap my boards with white freezer paper if I am using them between tiers. Shinny side out...

I don't cover my cakeboards that are between tiers. I use to until I read several post on cc from professionals that said they didn't.

I only cover the cakeboard that my finished cake sits on.

I do cut a piece of wax paper or freezer paper the size of my cakeboard to put between the cakeboard and the next tier so that it doesn't stick to my cake.

when you say boards do you mean the currogated cardboard ones??? i didn't know you could use just those i though you had to use seperator plates.....now you have me wondering... i have my first wedding cake order (from my home) coming up on the 15th and the couple wants a square three tiered offset/angled stacked cake and i was going to use the seperator plates but if i could just use the boards i think i would rather do that any info would be great TIA

Yes you can use the cardboard boards. I never use seperator plates for stacked cakes. I'm sure some do but I don't.

Only if using some other medium besides cardboard between tiers. A sharpened wooden dowel will go all the way through cake and cardboard w/o precut holes.
