I have been asked to make a wedding cake for my niece. She has a picture that shows a fondant covered cake. Each tier has what appears to be a fondant band that wraps around each tier and extends above each tier by an inch or so. The band is made up of cut out fondant circles. The question is how do I make this band? Is there a mat that could be used to roll out the fondant and cut out the circles? I guess I could roll out a strip of fondant and then cut out the circles but I was hoping for an easier way
Thanks for your help
Leah
Without a picture it would be hard to say but I think you are on the right track. I would use the same or different sized round biscuit cutters to cut out circles before applying to the cake.
If your piping skills are MAGNIFICENT you could pipe the circles in royal icing. I rather think cutting fondant circles is the way to go on this one though.
I would cut the circles out of fondant glue the first layer on one by one and then go back and overlay the second layer using very dry circles for the ones at the top edge.. so they hold their shape it really goes pretty quickly. I love this design Very Pretty cake.. Good luck with it and have fun.
It looks like the base pattern was done with a stencil. Then, the fondant circles were added.
The best way to get circles with rounded edges (like a bangle), is to cover your fondant with plastic wrap. Use your cutter right over the plastic wrap. Then, use a slightly smaller cutter to cut away the inside. Remove plastic wrap.
Great tip Diane!! Thanks! Instead of a stencil what about just flat ringsfor the 1st layer. then use the plastic tip for the top layer of rings..?? do you think that would be too bulky?? Im just wondering??
Wow, that is such a gorgeous design? Do you know who created the cake in your photo?
I was thinking that you might need to use gumpaste for the outer circles so they don't lose their shape but they need to be dried on a curve to match the cake.
Let us know when you post a photo. This is an amazing cake!
I think cutting out flat rings for the first layer would be just fine. Time consuming, but probably easier than stenciling!
If you have a pasta roller, you can make those rings near paper thin.
I agree- I want to see a photo when you get it done too, and let us know how you ended up doing it! I would love to try that some time if I knew how ahead of time
I saw a picture of the cake in Martha Stewart's magazine. I am sure you can find it on her website. Good luck with the cake!
Fantastic cake. It will be a hit.
I might also suggest gum paste since it dries so much faster then fondant.
Please let us see the outcome when you are done.
This is really nice. Your niece is a lucky girl.
Thank you all SOOO much! Great ideas. This is why I love this site.
I think I will try cutting the first layer of rings flat then use the plastic technique for the top layer.
The wedding is May 22 so I'll post pictures when I'm done.
Yes it was featured in Martha Stewart Weddings.
Thanks again
Leah
You did a fabulous job! Did you end up using the plastic cutting method? I want to try that. And did you assemble the cake before adding the final round of circles? I'm sure everyone loved it!
I assembled the cake first then placed the circles starting with the bottom layer. I made the circles from 50/50 fondant/gumpaste. I used 2 round cutters ( 1inch and 3/4 inch) one inside the other and seperated by a garden hose gasket. This made the circles symetrical and allowed me to cut them and then kinda plunge them out of the cutter. You have to be carefull picking them up so they don't get wonky. I tried the plastic but couldn't cut the circles all the way through. To get them more rounded I just kinda wiggled the cutter.
Hope this helps

Excellent! And great idea for making a concentric circle cutter!
Do you have it in you photos yet? I would like to save it to faves!
I saw it on the previous page but not in her photos. I love to comment in the post but also on the photo itself. And I want to save it to my favs cause it is very different!
