Hi guys ok here is the deal I got a request for a bridal shower cake. The maid of honor came in with her mom to place the order of course she tells me its going t be a tiffany blue themed tea party type bridal shower gives me a color swatch a copy of the invitation (see below)
I let her know we can a tiered cake with the tea party theme (u know with the nice tea server and the tea cups), and use the cherry blossoms as designed in the invitation to bring it the details.... I was picturing it already in my head and it looked AMAZING lol
Well........she says: Well actually I know exactly what I want and how I want it. I am very creative and want something different....
I want a sheet cake (ps I HAVE NEVER DONE A SHEET CAKE) OK... so here is the part where I regret not getting Sharons sheet cake DVD lol
Well this is what she has in mind a sheet cake. With a brides dress on top (not the head) just like from the neck down. Holding a bouquet of red roses with the train flowing to the side of the cake thats one corner the other corner to say Congratulations Carla and bring in the flower detail from the invitation on the corner. So I kind did a rinky dinky sketch and she said. Thats exactly what she had in mind..
I made the drawing right then and there with her so I didn't really have time to research or anything.... but she loved the sketch....
So I come to you all CCers masters of cake ideas
I don't know if this is good.... or if there is something u can think of to make this design "POP" u know....
What do u think of the sketch???? I have no clue as to how to do this please help me with a design or on how to pull this off. I have included a picture of the rinky dinky sketch the color swatch and the invitation. I need ideas.
Do I do the dress out of fondant? A 2D design? With maybe gumpaste roses on top like everything would be 2D and the red roses would be in gumpaste on top of the cake... with a nice ribbon... so I guess a 2D dress... with 3D gumpaste roses on top of the cake like she is holding them?
I love the invitation and they are doing the tea party theme so that would have been perfect for the tea party cake, but the client has a specific cake in mind and needs a sketch by tmo noon
Thanks in advance for any and all the help you guys can send my way
Blue fondant covered cake with the bride overlay ...could be 2D or slightly 3-D figure.....3-d bouquet.....flowers on left hand corner also fondant overlays......
So I kind did a rinky dinky sketch and she said. Thats exactly what she had in mind..

If she loved the sketch then I wouldn't change it, otherwise she might be mad if you bring something else and she is expecting this - or you will have to show her the new sketch. To me, if the customer likes what I sketch, I try to make that!
As far as how to do it - it sounds like you have pretty good ideas - I like the fondant and gumpaste ideas - it will make it look clean and sophisticated. I have Sharon's DVD (I actually won it off her blog - yay!) and wish I could let you borrow it - it is great!!!

thanks.... and if I was just little closer to NE... I would go a borrow it hehehe...
I hve to send her the final sketch tmo.... so I was wondering if there was anything that could make the cake more elegant I guess... DH mentioned doing the dress skirt in sugar veil....
what about the cake board? should I add details to it?
I definitely think a 2d dress would be perfect. I think your sketch is lovely and it will be beautiful with the bunched fondant gown flowing over the edge of the cake on the one side and the 3D cherry blossom branch on the other....very balance an d pretty. And totally a 3D gumpaste flower bouquet it will really be gorgeous!!
You could do the cake board blue with more cherry blossoms on it? I like the pops of red!
I don't know anything about sugarveil, I've never worked with it - I was looking at the sketch picturing the dress with white fondant folded (wrinkled?) to look slightly 3D..?? I don't know...
I love your design! I would do some aspects in 2d, like the tree branches and then some in 3d like the tree blossoms and flower petals. Maybe do the bust in 2d and the dress and flowers in 3d.
I just did something similar a few weeks ago. I don't like doing sheet cakes either. It was for my nephew's Bride to be's shower. They gave me a napkin as my guide. The napkin had the gown and tux on it, both on hangers, a wedding cake and a bouquet. I didn't get a picture, but it turned out pretty well for a sheet cake! I know you'll do a great job. Good luck and be sure to post the picture.
mama2_3 that is what I was thinking of.....
I, at least feel better to see that you guys are liking the design... so I can go from there... I am also leaning towards 2D & 3D... like I can picture the fondant dress draped over and flowing to the cake board.. and I like how it looks (in my head of course) lol
I was wondering if I should do the bust and dress top with a RI flood design or just cutting the fondant and placing it... whatcha think?
I am also wondering about a border... what would be good.. or should it be something very minimal where it's ot "disturbing" the design...
If the cake is covered in blue fondant.... what color should the cake board be? not sure if the same blue... so it flows or what
tia

I'd say minimal... tip 5 dots or something. I'd say a white board, maybe some cherry blossoms on it, but that's just me Good luck!
I would do a black board and tie the black in otherplaces on the cake. See how the invitation harmoniously uses blue, red, and black. The text could be black and the cherry blossum branch(not red like in the pick).
This you could do a red border around the bottom(something simple- make gumpase cherry blossoms and use those 3d for the branch and along the border(not one after another but every 4 inches or so).
That way the white dress catches your eye and becomes the focal point.
Wow, that sketch is beautiful!! I agree with everyone on how to make it pop.
My question is why doesn't anyone like sheet cakes?
I have to make one for next week, and now you guys have me spooked.
Anything I should know about? Worry about? Tips? Concerns?
Maybe do the border in the red with tiny white dots to mimic the invitation and then a cherry blossom every once in a while. Or just do the same blue with the tiny dots and cherry blossoms.
wow... I like that... to add the cherry blossoms randomly around the cake board.. thanks u guys....
vickymacd: I don't know about others.. but me personally... it's like I relate sheet cake to a supermarket cake... so I kinda find it hard to make it into something that is more better (lol... not a word... but I like saying more better hehehehe)
But of course my opinions are changing now that I see how u guys liked what I did and after seeing how good Sharon's sheet cakes come out... just a little aprehensive I guess... but don't get scared... lol.. I am glad I will be able to make one and hopefully change my viiews on sheet cakes...
and post it here... I value everyone's input and CC'ers always come to our resue with awesome ideas...
Good Luck..
I am happy and now sicked to start this cake... u guys gave me the push I needed!! thanks
I would like to see a picture of the bridal shower cake, I was looking for it on your pictures and I don't see it. Would like to see how it turned out!

which one?
Your cake sketch looks lovely! I would do the cake board in the same blue as your cake so that the flowing white wedding dress really pops as it spills over the edge. Breaking up the line between cake and board with piped dots and cherry blossoms looks good in my mind's eye.

Do you mean the cake she is discussing in this thread?? She hasn't made it yet if so!
CHasey I like that.... I think that would look really good cause there would be no break...
Thanks
Hi. I came across this thread and expected to be able to see the finished product. Alas, I cannot find it! Did you post pictures of it anywhere?
