Please answer the following questions. Just curious how cc members started with cake decorating.

1- What was your first cake you made?

2- Your all time favorite cake you created?

3. Cake related goals for 2010

4. Where do you get your ideas?

Here is my answers:

My first cake was from the betty crocker cookbook using round pans to make a bunny for my kids

2. My favorite cake I made was 3 tiered vegan wedding cake that had no nuts, flour, or dairy for my niece who was allergic to many foods. I decorated the cakes with fruits. She was so happy to have a wedding cake.

3. My cake related goals include

attending ICES this summer in San diego

be more active with my local cake club in New York.

Create a simple wedding cake for my brother this September

Enroll in local cake classes in New York to improve my piping skills

Support my local cake shops by purchasing bakery items from them.

Enjoy baking cake for family celebrations.

4. I get my cake ideas from reading cake books, looking at bridal magazines at bookstores, and reading cake websites from other cake decorators.

1- What was your first cake you made?

I loved baking for years, never really thought about decorating til last year, first cake was inspired by debbie brown with a fondent peron sat with shoping bags - for a good friend

2- Your all time favorite cake you created?

I made a ponystable cake (again debbie brown) and I made my sons 3rd b'day cake last year, my first 3 tier jungle cake with help from cc

3. Cake related goals for 2010

To become more confident and creative

4. Where do you get your ideas?

Mostly from here! I love browsing the gallery for inspiration (so keep it coming), and i love looking through my collection of books. I get most of my advice from a local professional baker and from the forums on here!!

1- What was your first cake you made?
I've been baking for years but my first decorated cake was that silly star piped rainbow cake in Wilton Course 1 icon_smile.gif

2- Your all time favorite cake you created?
Although I have since improved my skills and could now make a much better cake, my all time favorite is still my daughter's wedding cake. I took up cake decorating to make that cake and she loved it. It was inspired by Martha Stewart, 4 tiers with different ribbon on each tier. I made gumpaste stargazers for it and every time someone went near the cake my DH excused himself from what he was doing to go over and point out that I made the cake and the flowers.

3. Cake related goals for 2010
Practice my piping skills so I can do beautiful scrollwork like I see here.

4. Where do you get your ideas?
Everywhere. Here on CC, from paper and fabric, from books and other websites, even a house. There is a house in my neighborhood that is dark brown with brick red trim and vibrant purple clematis and I really want to do a cake in those colors.

1- What was your first cake you made?

First cake I made? I don't remember really well. I was a kid and my grandmother helped me with it.

First cake I decorated was a birthday cake I did waaaay back in college for one of my friends. It was a "Ponta-Kun" from Saber Marionette J, her favorite anime at the time.

I didn't officially catch the cake decorating bug until Spring '07 when I took Wilton classes with another friend.

2- Your all time favorite cake you created?

It's a toss up between the Baby Godzilla cake I did for my sister's birthday, or the Cinco De Mayo sunburst cake I did for a work party a couple years ago.

3. Cake related goals for 2010

To have something finished in time for the State Fair, to attend either Cake Camp or ICES (though I don't see either of those two happening), and to move away from fondant covering and decor and work harder on buttercream piping and techniques (see answer #4)

4. Where do you get your ideas?

Pretty much everywhere, but lately I've become enamored with old cake decorating books from the 40's thru 70's. I have been gathering a sizeable collection and have about 40 books now from Wilton, Ateco, and others.

1- What was your first cake you made? An 8 in round cake for my best friend. Cute but sad. It had buttercream icing and raspberry filling. Shell boarders and a couple buttercream flowers on top. I remember it looked ok but the icing was too thin and it could see parts of the cake lol.

2- Your all time favorite cake you created? Wow, I have done several I am proud of. My spongebob, my ESPN cake, and my beer cooler cake are some of my favs.

3. Cake related goals for 2010? I am going to try to start a cake supply business and give some local classes on decorating.

4. Where do you get your ideas? CC

1- What was your first cake you made?

My first decorated cake was in Novemer 09, and was a birthday cake for my friend. It was box chocolate cake, and myabe a peanut butter filling? Covered in MMF and decorated with a pattern of little squares.

2- Your all time favorite cake you created?

A birthday cake for another friend just a few weeks ago. It was just a little 6 inch but it was the first time I tried quilling with fondant, and I was so happy with how the flowers and colours turned out.

3. Cake related goals for 2010

Learn how to decorate with just buttercream as well, pipe cleaner and better, find some different cake flavours, and maybe take the Wilton courses too.

4. Where do you get your ideas?

Definitely all on the internet, like here on CC, random Google searches. A wealth of info and inspiration!

This is fun.... so not counting the 9 by 13 birthday cakes etc. that I was born making, my first real one was one I made for my final project in culinary school. It was 3 tier 'wedding' cake with fondant, and pulled sugar flowers - the only ones I ever attempted because I don't have all the equipment. It turned out beautifully. What makes me sick is that the pictures apparently crashed with the computer they were on and so I only have the memory. icon_cry.gif

My favorite cake I have made... hmmm maybe my sisters wedding cake. simple 3 tier squares decorated with real white orchids and bells of Ireland.

Goals? I have enough of a hard time keeping any personal goals. Never thought of setting goals for cake decorating. Just do the best I can for each cake. Maybe when I am in a different place in life it might become a business, but my kids come before that.

Ideas... that depends on the cake. Meeting with the bride and finding out what they want is one of my favorite parts of the process. They are all so different. It has been for showers where I have really been able to do whatever I wanted. Some inspiration comes from internet- pictures of other cakes; then of course it becomes 'how can I make it even better'... Other than that, just dreaming up stuff, or theres always one of my fav. books, 'Cakes to Dream On' by Colette Peters.

The first cake I decorated was for my son's 1st birthday. That was 27 years ago -- please don't look at my gallery, it doesn't reflect 27 years of progress!!

I don't really have a favorite cake that I've done.

My goals for this year are to try different cake recipes and fillings, and to find more opportunities to make cakes!

I get inspiration from CC, but also from everyday things like wallpaper, fabric, etc. Last weekend, I sketched the painting that was hanging above the door in the restaurant while we waited for our food to come. It would make a gorgeous cake!

Oo, add that to my list of goals too! It's great to have all the other cakes to see around us, but I'd love to be able to come up with ideas on my own too. icon_smile.gif
