Have a little dilemma here. I have a request for a dreamsicle cake as one of the tiers on a cake due in August. My problem is that every other dreamsicle cake I have made was made with a cool whip based frosting.
So the question is: What kind of frosting would pair nicely with this cake that I can also decorate with, and leave unrefrigerated (for a few hrs).
I have tried pairing it with the cool whip frosting as a filling and frosting with buttercream, but after I left the test cake out and cut into it the filling had almost liquified.
I was thinking that maybe I could double the dreamwhip I add to my regular buttercream for more of a cool whip taste.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

I use vanilla SMBC for the filling and Ice with an orange buttercream. A tru creamsicle only has the vanilla on the inside, so this stays true to form. Very good and gets rave reviews.

moranda............ That sounds like it could be yummy. Think you could let me know how that combo tastes?

Ronbob1984 Thanks.... I will try that as another test this weekend. Thinking of freezing a huge sliced cake and just taking portions for my experiments.
Your orange buttercream: is it flavored with LorAnn oil?

I recently made my first dreamsicle cake, and I filled and frosted it with Indydebi's buttercream with vanilla and orange extracts in it. It was very good. I'm making orange dreamsicle cupcakes next week and I'm going to fill them with vanilla sleeve filling and frost them with the orange/vanilla buttercream.

Indydebi's buttercream is my go-to buttercream. Thinking of adding some orange extract to it. But I sure did love the taste of the coolwhip stuff. I plan on trying many more combos but would like to try combos that are already in use. Seems like my own experiments always go bad.

I use homemade orange extract, you could use Lorann oil or regular McCormick. I have used both and they were both good. I love my homemade extract though.

One of my most popular fillings with orange creamsicle cake is white chocolate truffle. (I pair it with a basic American buttercream). So, maybe a white chocolate buttercream?????

Let us know what you decide and if you liked it! icon_smile.gif

Orange extract is easy. Zest 2 medium oranges and add to 8 oz of GOOD vodka. Let sit in for at least 2 weeks and there you go. You can do this with lemon and limes. I also make homemade vanilla the same way. The key is using a good quality vodka. Doesn't taste like alcohol.

White chocolate frosting.. Yummy!

Thanks for the info on making your own orange extract. I was curious about how it was done and didn't want to ask. Was going to google it.
