I am making the box of popcorn tonight using the marshmallows. My question is #1 airbrush the "butter color" on (if so, do I air dry it first or just apply to cake) or hand paint them? #2 is marshmallow cut almost in 1/2 or almost in 1/4.

thanks for any advice

I don't have an air brush yet, so I just painted some coloured water onto the marshmellows with a brush and it looked fine.

I also ripped the marshmellows in half then stuck them back together again, and it was amazing how much it looked like popcorn since not all kernals are alike. I have also seen lots of them done where they are cut amost in 1/4's

I used fondant for my popcorn, i was never able to get the marshmellows to look like popcorn. Good luck!

when i made one the other week. just the bag and popcorn. the lady that i made it for sent me a pic. it was on coolest birhtday cakes . com. this person made her popcorn from real popcorn and that is what i did. she made it like you make rice krispy treats. pop the corn. let it cool. melt the marshmellow. then add the popcorn. my client said it was delicious. the kids loved it. i took the popcorn . that i didn,t put in the melted marshmellows and made sure i place them in place with the darker side showing. i haven,t posted the pic yet. but it went over really good. hth

My son and I made some for a cub scout cake. We used mini marshmallows, snipped an "X" into the top, almost all the way through. Then put them snipped side down and squash them. Let dry, spray on a little yellow and paint in the kernels with some brown airbrush color. Looked EXACTLY like real popcorn.

tiggerjo,

Just this past weekend, I just did a big box of popcorn with the popcorn flowing out of the top onto the cake board.

I can tell you what I did and maybe it will add to your perspective.

I used the same white butter cream for the popcorn as I used to ice the cake. I used the coupler opening for the popcorn - no special tip or anything. I was worried that the popcorn kernals were going to look like chocolate chips or tiny hershey kisses because of the peaks on them, but if you are very random in your placement of them and also go back and use the coupler tip to swipe some of the peaks, it looks like popcorn. Add in the details on the box, the yellow highlights for the butter and your mind registers "popcorn". No need to use another item such as marshmellows but if this works for you and you like it, then go for it.

As for the butter part: I don't have an airbrush machine at home so I used the spray stuff in the can - yellow. Works like a charm for this particular project where you don't need precision. (I would not recommend spray cans for precise details - you need and airbrush for that). If you have an airbrush machine it will work just dandy for the butter on the popcorn.

Hope it turns out well.
