Flavored Rainbow Cake

My son will be 22 next week and I'm looking for a challenge, something that I've not done before.

So, I saw a Rainbow Cake that has the coordinating flavors. Such as yellow is lemon, green is lime, and so on....

Does anyone have a method for this?

I'm thinking gel or paste colors to get the vibrant colors I'm looking for and then jello for the flavoring.

I saw this at a bakery called Sugarees in Mississippi.

jello will get you the flavor AND the color.......no need to add more color!

For the cleanest colors, start with a white cake. A yellow will work, but the colors won't be as clear.

I did a rainbow cake for my son's birthday in February. I started with the scratch WASC cake and used Americolor gels for the colors and it was beautiful! (It's in my photos if you want a visual). I did not flavor accordingly, but I imagine you could just leave the almond flavor out and use extracts as you mix in the colors.

I experimented this weekend with Jello for the flavoring of an 8" round I used 1 oz of Jello. The flavor did not come out, so I tried 2 oz for the 8" round and now I'm getting a slight after taste from the citric compound in the Jello.

The color is not deep enough for my taste as well.

So, my thoughts are to use extracts or to use juices/puree and small amounts of zest. To enhance the flavor. I need to have this cake for this Wednesday so ordering extracts is not an option as they will not get to me in time. However, I will place an order for extracts for future Rainbow cakes.

BTW, my colors are Red, Yellow, Green, Orange and Purple.

If anyone has any other suggestions please don't hold back.

I did a tie die cake for a little girsl rockstar bday party you for sure have to start with white cake. and you can ither do the jello which will add color and flavor or the gel color with the seperate flavoring both work. as far as layering you have to first divide the cake mix into seperate bowls then add the different colors to the bowls of mix ( 1 color per bowl) then pour the mix in the pan. you can either do layers of color or take a knife or toothpick and swirl the mix around once its in the pan to make tie die but be very careful if you mix too much it will turn brown

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the layers will be separate.

You don't have time, so just go to the grocery and pick up some flavors, and add a little zest if you have it. Most places should have at least orange, lemon, almond, peppermint, maple, and coconut.

If there is a Michael's or a JoAnne Fabrics, they will have good flavorings.

In future you can try KoolAid for the grape and other flavors...
Keep in mind it's been over 40 years since I had KoolAid in cakes or cookies, my mom used to use it; so you'd want to make a sample if you have time.

if you want the different layers you can divide the batter into 4 equal batches and color 2 of them yellow, and 1 red and 1 blue. then add what ever flavor you want and pour the batter in the pan in this order: yellow, blue, red, yellow. then when it bakes the yellow and blue will blend a little to make a thin layer of green and the blue and red will make a thin layer of purple and the red and yellow will make a thin layer of orange. then it will really look like a rainbow when you cut it and it will save you time of trying to divide and color 6 bowls of batter
