Hi everyone. I purchased the PME people/family molds. My question is does anyone else use them and do you have any tips. I have trouble with them sticking together when i pull them out of the mold. Do you use a 50/50 mix or straight fondant? Also do you let them dry in the molds? I love them the finshed product is great, its just i am having the trouble making them.

I have some too, and used straight gumpaste. I had a tough time, and had a hard time making them too. So, I would love to hear how it is done.

hello,

I know this post is old, but I googled and this is what came up.

I am considering buying these molds but I'm not sure how to use them... I usually make MM fondant and add tylose, so would I then just push it in the mold? Afterwards I guess I paint the details on... face clothing etc? Or I guess maybe I would overlay the clothing?

I also would like to know if you let them dry in the mold or out?

I used fondant/gumpaste mix for the one time I used my PME molds (http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1866174/1866125). You're supposed to make the pieces separately and let them dry before you put them together. I think that's what the instruction book said - I don't have it in front of me at the moment. I did the torso/head and let that dry before I attached any arms or legs. But I am FAR from an expert on these - like I said I've only used them once and didn't use the bride's legs! icon_smile.gif I painted the face on after they dried.

I am also trying to use these molds and just cant get them to work icon_sad.gif((
for me it just doesn't work how it is described in the booklet. when i join the back and front together they dont come out together.
I have tried to make them separately but they are hard to get out of the mold.

if any of you experts can assist please reply. Thanks icon_smile.gif)

Hi I use gumpaste. You have to use a lot of even pressure after you put the gumpaste in the mold. Then you have to trim it slightly. Then gently pull the molds apart and trim around the molds again just a little bit. After a day or 2 then go back and careful clean your molds up. At this point they are like working with greenware.

I hope this helps some of you, This is just what I have learned so far on how to use my PME molds.
P.S. it also helps once you can figure out just how much gumpaste you need for each mold and I used a lot of veg. oil at first then wiped it out with a paper towel this also helped

I am using these right now, and I freeze them. It makes it easier to get them out of the molds.
So far, It's worked pretty well, but I wasn't expecting perfection because it's for a bridal topper and the bride will be covered in fluffy white dress!

Thanks Ladies.
Just another question. Do you stick back and front together to set or do you make set them separately and stick them together after they come out of the mold?

hello everyone i am new to this site but i just thought i would try to help a few of you girls out with the problems you are having with the PME moulds ...first i brush alittle crisco oil to the molds ,not alot just brush alittle in the molds ..then i add my fondant or gumpaste ..i attach both molds together and press firmly ,i also attach a rubberband to keep them together.i let them sit for awhile before i attempt to take them apart ..i clean the sides off with a small knife then i start to ease them away from the mold alittle at a time ..i have had no problems ..hope this helps ..also let the parts dry before you attach the arms and legs to the torso this also helped when you are attaching clothing ...

so when you make them, you stick them together, and when you remove the molds, they don't pull apart? I have the molds (have had them for months) but never attempted to make them. now I really want to!

Thanks so much for the advice. I have attempted them once again by putting them in the freezer for a short while otherwise NO WAYS do they come even if i use crisco or oil. The back part of the mold comes off first. When you put both molds together do you glue them with syrup or water ? i find that they dont really join together so well. I suppose the more i practice the quicker i will find a solution.
Why couldnt they have made them in flexible silicone . . . soo much easier to take them out.

Silicone would've made them much more expensive LOL. I freeze all my molds. so much easier to get things out. I use a bit of royal icing to stick the peices together once dried. HTH

AJust an update regarding pme people moulds and if anyone else is looking for help. I got mine today and I made a person sat in kayak. For every 250g of fondant/roll out icing use 1/2 teaspoon of tylo powder (has to be the finest, you can get this off eBay from cake stuff, they also have Facebook page) kneed icing as you would and combine with tylo powder. Colour you paste as desired-make sure you wrap it in cling film. The instructions tells you to leave paste for 24 hours but I'm far to impatient for that! Follow exactly what instructions say and turns out fine! I'm just waiting for the arms to dry but ill upload a picture a.s.a.p. hope this helps!

I just used my silicone mold (not the pme people mold) and was having trouble pulling it without distorting it. So what I did was let it sit in the mold for half an hour or a bit more long enough for it to semi-harden> I then was able to carefully pull it out without distorting it. I am doing a second one and I wll leave it in longer for better result. I hope this helps.

AI have just purchased the pme people moulds today and was told to put wire in arms and legs so you have movement plus cocktail stick or spaghetti for neck/torso. I was also told to add edible clue to front and back to stick together while moulds are held together then sort off roll model dough out rathere than pull. anyone else tried this and does it work?

I don't own these so can't help, found the thread to be interesting.  But from my other molds I do freeze them.  But waiting 24 hrs to remove??? which of us can or wants to do this?  Sheesh...

But can I ask, Where did you purchase them from?

I got the set from Amazon. It was $49 or so. I think they are too large for what I wanted. They are for sale. Used once, all parts included.... I was thinking $35 plus shipping...

I've used mine several times with no problems.  I use straight gum paste tinted to the skin tone desired, and wet one side of the filled mold then squeeze together for about a minute.  When unmolded, one side will pop off (usually the back), trim the excess while the piece is still in the mold.  Let it sit for a bit to firm up, put in any necessary supports (I do the head/torso support while it is still being pressed together to avoid distortion) then unmold and pose.  I let the peices completely dry independently then use gum glue to put together and dress.

I made all of these using the child mold.   The hardest part is cleaning the seam, still working on perfecting that.

The black haired one used a different gumpaste that wouldn't set well, so she looks a little squished.

@ HEREKITTY, someone mentioned on another thread that, she normally waits till the molds are completely dried, then uses a fine sandpaper on them. I have the molds but havent been able to try her technique yet.

I need to make a topper for a wedding but plan on making it out of Sculpy so that it will last forever and I too plan on greasing the molds first - for easier release.
