Sorry if this seems like a dumb question - But if there is pudding already in the mix will it alter the texture or affect taste and baking time to add a pudding flavor to a box of pillsbury cake mix?
Or is is dense enough on it's own?

I would like to know too.

I tried a recipe from Cake Mix Doctor for the white chocolate pound cake and thought I could add one small box of white chocolate pudding to give it an even more pronounced flavor and it failed miserably. It fell, ended up about 1/4" tall in the center, and was extremely dense and doughy and I'm wondering if it was the addition of the pudding.

i ALWAYS add a package of pudding to my Pillsbury mix. Other wise I feel that my cakes and cupcakes are too crumbly. Me and my whole family LOVES it this way and can't have any other cake because of the way I do it icon_biggrin.gif

it makes it taste better icon_wink.gif

and maybe the cooking time is a bit longer...I use more batter in my pans though. and I always have to add an extra 10 mins. but this depends on the amount of batter.

I too always add a box of pudding to my pillsbury cake mix. It gives is extra flavor and makes for a better cake consistency. You will have to alter your baking time a little but it's worth it.

I always make sure I buy the cake mixes that have "a box of pudding added to the mix" then I add my own box of pudding. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for all of your replies - I have a Pillsbury White Cake mix with pudding already in the mix, and I wanted to make a dense moist lemon cake today for Easter.
I will add a box of lemon pudding and some lemon extract and add lemon curd to Sugar Shack's Buttercream recipe for the filling icon_smile.gif
Stay tuned! I'll post the results later...

I'm glad you asked. Everything I've read says not to add it if it's already in the mix.

I use Pillsbury with the pudding in the mix, and would love to use my Cake Mix Doctor 'recipes', but never have any 'un-puddinged' mix.

My motto is....only I can add things to make my cake mix better. Just leaving stuff out makes it un-special for me then icon_biggrin.gif

Well I made the cake adding the 4oz pkg. of lemon pudding to the Pillsbury white cake mix and replaced the liquid with 1 1/4 cup of 7-up for a citrus boost. I also added 4 eggs and 1/2cup of veg. oil. I also added 1 teaspoon of lemon extract to the batter.
I mixed 1 jar of lemon curd with about 2 1/2 cups of SugarShack's Buttercream icing for the filling and it was really delicious.
It turned out great! Everyone loved it icon_smile.gif

Sounds nice and lemony. My lemon cake is just sort of ...flat tasting.

Glad it worked - I can try some recipes, then!

Oh my poor waistline!

Do you just add the pudding mix to the cake mix, and nothing else - unless you want to get really fancy like the lemon cake??

The basic proportions are:

1 box cake mix
1 pkg. instant pudding and pie filling (4 serving size)
4 large eggs
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 cup vegetable oil

You can play with the flavors and add extracts and substitute other liquids for the water.
It's a good start for lots of gourmet ideas!
