Hello my name is Katilyn, I am a first year student at New England Culinary Institute. I am in the AOS Baking and Pastry program. I have to go on a 6 months internship but I can not find a place that will help me any cakes, if anyone has any suggestions it will greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I had to complete a 3 year apprenticeship when I was in school. Some years later, I was in the position to hire interns myself. Although I can't help you by giving you specific places to apply to, I can offer some tips to secure a position if it helps.

Does your school have a list of registered and approved shops/bakeries/catering facilities, etc? Most culinary schools have job assistance and placement programs. If you have to find a place yourself, some bakeries are hesitant to take on interns because they don't know what is expected of them as an employer. A cover letter with your resume should briefly explain the program and your objective. Make sure that you are clear about what the school expects that you will learn, what the job requires, and what your own expectations are.

Make sure your hours will count before you accept a position. If you are only interested in the hours you need to complete the requirements, be honest about it. Nothing is worse than going through the hiring process only to find out that the employee has no intention of staying on board afterward. Likewise, nothing is worse than you accepting a permanent position to find out that the employer has no intention of keeping you. Many places have no problem hiring a temporary position, as long as everyone is on the same page.

If the internship is unpaid, make sure that you are covered under the employers workers comp insurance or under a school policy. It varies from state to state, but often if you get hurt on the job, you are technically not an employee if you are not getting paid. Find out who is liable if you get hurt on the job. This is important.

I know it's not a list of bakeries, but I interviewed so many students who couldn't even tell me the details of their program or course of study, their career goals, long or short term. If they didn't know, how was I going to make sure they learned anything?!
