Several times recently I have seen people, in televised cake contests, using a Cricut system to cut gumpaste. Has anyone here used the Cricut in this way? I am curious on how to prepare the mat so the gumpaste releases easily after cutting.

I was just at the ICES cake show this weekend. They put a thin layer of crisco down first on the mat. It worked quit well. A new criket machine is coming into the market I think in May 2010. I'm in line to buy one.

I have cut gumpaste and fondant/gumtex on my cricut! With the Cricut Expression mat yu have to remove the stickiness using goo-gone or just scraping it away under soapy water. Then you brush it with crisco. There's a new Cricut Cake coming out and although I won't be buying it I WILL be buying the mats as they are ready to go for gumpaste. You also need a deepcut blade to cut gumpaste. Linda McClure has a fw great videos on youtube. Just do a search for her.

You can also remove the sticky with 190 proof alchol. It comes off so easy with that and no horrible smell. If you do a search for cricut on this site you will find tons of info on usig it with different mediums. You can get the new cake cricut at a discount untilo 3/31/10 at www.cutncrop.com using discount code "cake" I have mine pre ordered. They are due to ship May 1.

Is there any difference in the cricut cake and the other models other than the color and mat?

There seems to be a lot of differences.

Yes, there are some differences. Jennifer Atwood has had the Cake for several weeks testing it in a commercial bakery for Cricut. Check out her detailed experiments at
