I normally don't shop Walmart and I had my daughter purchase powdered sugar (yesterday) from there.
This morning I am making basic buttercream frosting. I need 18 cups of frosting so I decided to make 2 triple batches of buttercream. I am on my first batch of triple and something doesn't seem right here......
I put 1 1/2 cups of butter, 1 1/2 cups of shortening together. Then I added the liquid... while that was mixing I emptied 2 bags of powdered sugar (2lbs each) into a bowl to measure out 12 cups of powdered sugar. Well I added in my 12 cups of powdered sugar and I have NO powdered sugar left in my bowl?? I thought you get 8 cups of sugar out of a 2 lbs bag?? Am I doing my math wrong?? I weighed the one bag I have sitting on my counter and it is 32 oz.
Where did I go wrong? I need to have these cakes done by 1pm.
Thanks for any help
Michele

I use their sugar all the time but I don't measure it...I use it by the 2 lb bag (or I weigh out 1 lb)...its usually 4 cups per pound so you should just use a bag and a half for your recipe if 12 cups.

That product is by weight and a lot of settling occurs during shipping and handling and stocking because they throw those bags around and smash them flat when they stock them. It is a good idea to sift.

I use the walmart icing sugar when i dont feel like going anywhere else cause its close. Ive never had a problem with the amounts, they always seem to be correct however I get alot of lumps in my icing and if I put the sugar in a plastic container it goes rock hard within a day compaired to the other brands which consistency doesnt change regardless of the container they are kept in. Theres definitely something different about this sugar but it works if you're in a jam.

My recipe calls for 2 lb. bag so don't usually have to measure - but the few times I do - I always weigh it. Powdered sugar is too hard to measure - it's never the same.

I use Wal-Mart p.s. quite often. I never measure as my receipe calls for the whole 2 pound bag. I ALWAYS sift though. ALWAYS.
