It's a sad, sad day for us here in Jacksonville, FL. Our only cake supply shop, McKendree's Create A Cake, has closed it's doors after 35 years.
I only recently discovered the shop and shopped there as often as I could to help support the local business...but had heard yesterday through my cake club (SAGNFL) that they closed. So sad for the loss, and so sorry for the owners with this tough economy. Best of luck to them in their future endeavors! We will miss you!
How is it I never had a chance to visit there??!? Where abouts were they???
I've personally found that Michael's in Regency & the New Walmart at the end of Southside each have a good size inventory of Cake supplies. Kinda pricy but that's normal.
Sorry eme926...I even searched in the forums to see if anyone else had posted about it, but nothing came up!
The shop was in Orange Park, Blanding and 103rd I believe (I am bad about addresses). It was a small shop, but it was the only one around. And now Jacksonville has none!
I'm going to be moving to the Jacksonville area soon and I am really sad to hear that there won't be a specialized cake store! I was just about to post a forum question asking about that! If you don't mind my asking, I don't mean to change the subject, what kinds of opportunites are there in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas for a fellow cake decorator? (i.e. cake clubs, competitions, shows, classes...ect) TIA!
Hi Cakefairy,I think what happens to all of our local shops is that WE try to save a couple of dollars and order online.I say WE because I'm also guilty of doing it at times. It's hard for a small business to compete with mega stores on pricing. So in my opinion,we are the main cause of our local shops going out of business.
I was going to go this week also, until I heard this news. I purposely left out a bunch of stuff from my GSA order last week because I knew Create A Cake had the other things I wanted. Now I'll have to make another order from GSA.
What a sad day......the McKendree's were the nicest people you'd ever want to do business with. I'm just a home baker, but bought all my boards, boxes, etc. from Diehl. Does anyone know if they are continuing their online store? I'd do business there just because. Whatever the case, I wish them the best!!!!
