I Was Enraged By A Cake Decorator!

What was the bride's budget? Maybe the decorator charged $50 for delivering and setting up the cake and the rest of $35 was for the cake???
UNBELIAVABLE
I hope the person who made the cake isn't a CC member...
IF the person IS a member here, she is obviously NOT learning much, imo.

UNBELIAVABLE
The "decorator" (using that term loosely) told the OP's mom she had charged $85 PER TIER.

Well, that's where you and I differ. I hope she IS a CC member. Anybody doing that to a bride needs to be called out on it publicly.

Why do I find this statement supremely sad?
Perhaps she will become a CC member. Learn a lot. Make better and better cakes.
I look back at my first cakes - yikes! ...And a year from now hope I will see the improvments from last year's cakes.
(And I hope she gets some help before the next paid job doesn't get fixed and she finds herself in trouble)
Ana-sometime people do make up stories like that for attention or because they think it's funny. It's happened several times here.
I sincerely hope that this thread doesn't come back and bite everyone in the butt. I'm still not buying it.....
Come on folks, PLEASE STOP POSTING 'I THINK IT IS A HOAX'.
Threads get locked or erased when posters keep doing that. This is not the site for it.
There are plenty of places on the web to stir up trouble.
We stir up CAKES here.
Thank you.
7yyrt..... I was just expressing my opinion, which is not a reason for deletion of a thread. I was not disrespectful or rude. Are you insinuating that unless we all gush and oooh and aahhh, then the thread will be deleted?
As has been stated before, there have been threads where the OP made up a story to just create drama.... this is a fact, not an accusation.
Again, I was only stating my opinion.
The moderators are a bit testy of late, and are erasing threads at the drop of an insult.
It wasn't particularly directed at you. hugs
Thanks! WOW!!!!!! I am speechless! Completely speechless. Amazing job on the save cause that bride would have been crying had you not saved that cake!
I agree-great save! But -and I am probably alone in this- I would have actually liked the cake if some of the obvious was fixed as far as cake boards. If those boards were flush with the bottom of the cake I kinda like the 'abstractness' of the smeary icing and the humps give it a 'contoured pan' look. Had those boards been trimmed and a tiny little border put on I wouldn't hate it. I doubt I'd have paid $85 a tier either way.
I'm just thinking about how I would feel if someone said that sort of thing about my first cakes...
I do agree, however, that this shouldn't have been a paid order. And, it was a great save!
Eeeeccckkkk!!! Thank goodness you were there! I would cry if that first one was my wedding cake!
I'm just thinking about how I would feel if someone said that sort of thing about my first cakes...
If your first cake looked like that and you took money for it and delivered it to a bride's wedding day, then how you,as the baker, would feel about these comments is immaterial.
Sometimes the truth hurts and in this case it SHOULD BE very painful.
A bride's wedding day is NOT the time that we worry about being nice and not hurting someone's feeeeeeeeelinnnnnnnnnnngs over a cake that looked like this AND was paid for.
If someone wants to play ball in the Big Boys World of Business, then there are certains standards and ethics to be met. Those who cant' stand the heat, shouldn't turn the oven on in the first place.

OMG!! LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that was good.
This brings back so many memories of my Daughter's wedding last June. Her fiance's Mother knew somebody that decorated cakes so she made the arrangements and paid for the cake. My daughter looked at pictures "she made in the past" and settled on a design.
Fast forward to wedding reception....
My sister (whom has decorated cakes, including my son's wedding cake, my wedding cake and many others) left the wedding a little early and was helping with the final set up of the reception area before the quests arrived (during pictures) when the decorator delivers the cake 30 minutes before the reception (as scheduled) was to begin. My sister is standing in front of the cake looking at it not realizing the decorator is standing beside her and says "I don't know how much they paid for this, but I hope it wasn't any more than $50." The decorator never said a word to her. This cake was just unbelievable. Not as bad as the one we are discussing at the moment, but still bad enough that my daughter and her husband are still upset about it. He is the assistant manager of the bakery at the local grocery store so he knows how cakes should look. They intended to have the cake made there but when his Mom made the arrangements and agreed to pay for the cake, they decided to just go with it and not cause a rift. Anyway, the tiers had cake boards that were a good inch to large all the way around, the shell borders were falling away from the cakes and the icing was cracked all over it. She even changed the original design without consulting my daughter prior. When confronted by the MOG, the decorator blamed it on the weather. I'm sorry, but cake boards don't grow when the weather is a little warm. Luckily we had a great caterer for the meal and he literally made the cake disappear before it was really noticed. I think he didn't want anybody to think it came from him.
That being said, Great save. The MOB was surely greatful.
Ok.. I can't send w/o e-mail addresses, so I thought I'd upload them and post images here.
"The Before..'"
"After..."
Your cake does look very nice... BUT~ Is this a Joke?? Who sets up a cake like that and leaves the carboard overlapping that much? It looks like the tiers are just ballancing on one another... With all due respect, I've been duped on here a few times before. I guess I find it hard to believe anyone would deliver a cake like that.
I'm not saying this post is "untrue", it's just hard to believe.
Excellent save!
I hope this cake decorator is on this board so she can explain to us why would you make a wedding cake like that??!!!
Now that would be VERY interesting.
Every time I look at those beads I feel a lump in my throat.
I totally agree debi, no one should have received any money for this cake. No dispute there!
But, I guess I read wrong - I was under the impression that a friend of a friend made the cake, and I assumed they were only starting out, not actually in business... I guess we all know what happens when we assume!!
Leave it to Debbie for her creative words of wisdom!
Funny thing, my nephew is getting married in September and they wanted me to do their cake for them. Their venue told them no at first because they had said that their Aunt Kim wanted to do their cake. So after their food tasting they showed them some of my work and then they realized that I wasnt just some relative that wanted to make a cake, they agreed to it. I think this is why some venues will not let outside venders bring cakes in!
WOWOWOWOWOW! That is just crazy!! I'm a newbie and even i know better than to do something like that! That is horrible! You did such a wonderful job! GOOD SAVE!
Wonderful save! I too am a newbie, friends & family think my cakes are wonderful. I keep telling them that they are no where near where they need to be. I consider any cake that I do now practice. I wouldn't have even showed this cake to anyone. But then again I wouldn't have agreed to make it much less charge someone for it. I consider my "caking" to be a hobby.
