I was asked to do a cake topper... just the topper... which I have never done before... but I agreed... anyways... the theme is Minnie... I started doing a transfer but was not happy with the results... so I decided to go to plan B... fondant pieces... then not too happy with that one either... I finally did a 3D.. or 2D I think it's 2D... anyways...
I like to 2 or 3D version... DH likes the fondant Pieces Version...
Can you help me decide?

which one you think is best A for 2-3D or B for Fondant...
AND
How much should I charge???

They are both adorable!

I have never done a topper by itself so I am not sure how much you should charge.

A- looks more like a custom topper, B- looks more like a pre made topper. (but is really cute!)

How long did it take to make each one and figure how much you want for your time plus supplies.

I can't really tell how big it is.

I may be WAY off but I would think in the $25 range.

Um...
Hate to be a downer, but Disney does not allow their characters to be sold unless under license. They have fined people many thousands of dollars for selling just one little Disney cake.
Please don't flame me, I felt it needed to be mentioned.

7yyrt is absolutely right. Copyright issues can get ugly and expensive.
You can make them for personal use but not for sale.

I like them both! Sorry!

You can make them and give them away but you can not sell them legally.

Personal use is fine but if you charge money, whoever you are charging - friends, family included - it's business and can leave you open to legal action.

Yes there are lots of cakes on the internet that may break copyright - lots of people do it. But if it were me I would be wary of posting a question on pricing and providing a link to your business website on a public forum... the previous posters were just watching your back.

A lot of the ones in the gallery were for personal use ie: thier childs birthday cake .
Not sold. Like others said It IS done just not legally. You can do whatever you want, You are the one assuming the risk. icon_smile.gif

Just the same in most states it is illegal to sell anything eatable that is made in your home, unless you are licensed by the health department but people do it .

I am not trying to spreak for 7yyrt , or tell you what you should or should not do, I am sure she just wanted to let you know what the legalities are.

No.. I understand... I wasn't planning on making all this money for it so I can just give it to her as a gift... she is a personal friend..

I was just curious.. but I understand now... personal use it okay... making a profit from it.. it's not okay.,.. I got it.. thanks for the info... it's better safe than sorry...

Whatcha Think....

I did it out of fondant... like a puzzle... then with my extruder and the smaller round disk I outlined everything... I then cut a piece of fondant in the same shape and it's drying as a back for the topper... next I will add the dowels and sandwich another layer of fondant so it's secure and she can just place it on the cake when I take it to her, I hope you guys like it... I feel like I failed on the RI transfer method... I will have to try again another time... I want to be able to know how to do it even if I end up doing something else... the something else should be an option.... get it... lol

I really love B, but given the choice I'd say I liked A better (even though it doesn't matter now) to me B looks prefabricated, like anyone could just trace the pattern.......A to me says "This girl has some mad modelling skills" no way could I model something and have it ACTUALLY look like Minnie....but cut out puzzle pieces, yep I could do that!

u have no idea how good that makes me feel... what u just said... I do like both but I think it takes more to make A... and it's hard to model something so iconic and that needs to come out just like it cause if u get it wrong... it just won't look like minnie... thanks for your appreciation to the work it takes...

Don't get me wrong... I thank everyone that voted and I made both so I feel good that both are liked... but I personally love to madel things.... I feel like u said... u need to have skills to be ale to model something or someone...

I also finished the modeled one too... going to post the pics in large so you can see it... page 2 has the B picture finished and bigger....
