Customer requested this cake to feed 40 -50 people. Looking for some help in pricing it. I usually end up not charging enough for my cakes compared to most people. Its my own fault because I feel like I'm new at it & I shouldn't be charging what expierenced decorators charge & if I charge a lot I won't get the business. But in the end I get frustrated because I know I should've charged more. Just for a guide ..I called a local bakery & they charge $3 /slice for all tiered cakes (buttercream) they don't do fondant. Depending on detail they go up from there. Need some suggestions please.
I do the same thing. I just charged $200.00 for my first wedding cake. 14-10-6, with fondant! Maybe I'll do better pricing next time. I've heard $3.00/slice before. That seems fair. This is advice I've heard before (here) and it's what I'm going to use from now on. Before you quote a price, calculate what it will cost you to buy the materials. Then estimate the amount of time you will be spending on it. There are programs you can buy or you could use a spreadsheet. It is very important to know what you have to pay for the materials. This has got to be the best way because what is fair here in Texas can be completely different than what's fair in Maine.
judging by the other cakes in your gallery, I would say you're definitely capable of pulling off this cake and having it look pretty similar to the one pictured. So if that's the case, I would say you should charge at least $3/serv. if that gives you a profit. You need to figure out your expenses on this cake first, before you quote a price to your customer!
I'm in Austin and I've seen some bakeries charge $3-$4 for fondant some times even $5. For butter cream the lowest I've seen is $1.50
Don't be scared you can definitely pull it off. And it all depends where you are located.
You are going to get someone commenting on whether you are legal baker or not, but anyhow I would go with 3 dollars as well.

but I'm in So Cal and prices are high here, and knowing that would take me a long time with the figures (there's no mold for the SS characters, correct?)
I wouldn't charge by the serving (for any of my cakes, that method just doesn't work in my brain!)
I would charge a straight fee of $250, for the same exact cake.
Just a reminder: I am NOT pro...maybe I shouldn't have even said anything...
thanks everyone for your help. I did end up going w/ the $3 /serv. & she booked!! I'm really excited to make this cake....I hope it comes out pretty close to the picture. I'll post pics. Its not til May, though.
No there is no mold that I know of for the characters.
