any tips or tricks on the converse baby shoe?

I wanted to make a converse baby shoe for a baby shower cake..and wanted to know if there were any tips tricks that helped you in the process.

Did you use gumpaste, MMF, a mix?
Ive seen the template here, and it still looks hard to me (im a newbie in the real sense of the word) but always wanting to try soemthing harder!

You Tube has an excellent video, and gave me the courage to actually do it. I am visual too. Makes it really, a NO BRAINER... and for me that says a LOT! lolol

use a 50/50 mix. I tried to use all gumpaste and it dried quicker than I could get it in place and made it looked a little "creased" in some areas (which is good if you want an old worn pair of shoes), the 50/50 mix gives you a little more play time before it hardens up.

The laces were the only thing that gave me trouble, I ended up using the clay gun and make a string and just put them in the holes but not thru

I used full gum paste and felt like I was playing the old game "perfection" where the timer runs out and you lose!! I was able to get them done by my nerves were a wreck. So, yes do use 50/50!! The pattern template worked great, just follow the directions and you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck!!

The hardest thing I found about using stellastarchild's template was actually making the bootie-shaped mold to form the sneakers around. That's the dough she recommends making out of flour+salt I think. That thing would not retain its shape til dry so I chucked it, but I found it even harder to attain the right shape using cotton balls/other things to hold up the gp precisely in the shape of a shoe. My gp converses thus came out a little less "full" looking than I would have liked, and if I make them again I will explore how to have better success with the forming mold, or I'll use my shoddy mold WITH those other materials to fill in the gaps.

Other than that part they were really quite simple using the template; easier than they looked. The laces were a little tricky but not difficult overall. I have not yet watched the video.

And yes, 50/50 fondant/gp is the way to go.

I'm on my way to work, but wanted to help. All other suggestions so far are exactly what I did. I started with the stellastarchild template too. It gave me the courage to try.

But I didn't make the foot mold - I made a thick sole and used a little ball instead. I made and dried the parts in steps. I found a picture of the chucks and resized it to the actual size then used it as a template.

I also made lots to allow for breakage, so had enough to use for two cakes with a pair to spare!

I fired off my post while late for work...so should probably add some details.

Once the ball in the toe was fairly solid, I cut the tongue of the shoe and it is supported by a makeup sponge/wedge cut to the right angle, then a piece of parchment to keep from sticking. Once the tongues were dry, I did the little white rubber toe guard. When those were firm enough, I pulled the foam/parchment supports, then wrapped the colored shoe part around the sole of the shoe and the toe guard. The rest is adding as many or as few of the details you like.

Again - stellastarchild's templates and pictures were my starting point. That link above goes to all her shoe pictures.
