I am doing last minute cake for a neighbor's funeral and I thought I had everything...I use the darn good chocolate cake recipe and realized after I started that my sour cream is BAD, so what can I substitute, if anything??? Other ingredients ar already in the KA... please help!
I found this on the internet, but you probably don't have these ingredients on hand, either:

I hope you find an alternative!

Thanks, I had seen that too. A lot of things online say to make sour milk... some people even say use the sour cream unless there is mold onit...but I don't think I can do that...
Is this s scratch recipe or a box base?
If it is the boxed one, I think you can add additional oil to it to make up for the sour cream (NOT the entire amount though!) If it calls for 1 cup sour cream, I would try 1/3 cup oil.
If it is scratch, I don't know what to tell you.
I don't know what the recipe you have is, but I use both sour cream and instant pudding in my doctored cake mix cakes. If you have the pudding, I'd bet that'd help w/ moisture. Sorry I can't be of more help; Hope all turns out ok.
Thanks everyone! I have no idea what will happen, but I used a tad more oil and some mayo (per some other subtitution sites)...the batter tasted good, we'll see about the end results...thanks for all of your quick replies!
Sorry I know that is a little bit late but for next time use 1 cup os whole milk with 2 Tbsp of lemon
I'm sort of in the same predicament, no sour cream. If I use mayo, what is the proportion that equals 1 cup sour cream. Is it equal amounts???
TIA
I've used yogurt (vanilla flavored, or plain would work) before, like TexasSugar suggested, and it worked great.
