hi everyone,

Stupidly i told someone i would bake them a carousel cake without actually knowing how to make one!! so now i am in desperate need of some help. What i want to know is how can i support the top tier without pillars, i have dowels but is this enough to support a top tier the top tier will be on a cake board. the cake underneath will have the dowels sticking in it and holding up top cake-i have lost sleep over this one and im very worried it will be a disaster and help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

honestly i wouldnt have a clue.. but i would suggest having a large support in the middle, maybe a large pillar?? and cover is with pretty gumpaste and such then have outter pillars decorated in a similar fashion. caraosels have these pillars to so just make them part of it.. am i making sense? lol. i wouldnt try with just dowels tho.. maybe do a practise run? hth

I just made a carousel cake for my daughter and it was the enginerring that caused me the most trouble (see my pics). I used Wilton's stacking plates with the pillars on the perimeter. I wanted the cakes the same size so I got 2 of the 12 inch plates. Turns out, they are designed to have the top teir 2" smaller than the base if they are to fit properly. Despite my husbands best attempts to rig, it really didn't work and it stayed steady just long enough to sing Happy Birthday.

If I had to do it again, I would really try to use one center pillar. That's what carousels look like anyway.

Good Luck

i have complete instructions for the cake that you want to make. They use a empty kitchen towel roll and eight dowel rods. They balance another cake on a board on these. if you give me your email address I can scan it at work tomorrow and email it to you....and anyone else that wants it!! icon_biggrin.gif

If you are going to make a carousel and want it sturdy enough this is what I would recommend, as this is what I did and it turned out great.
Make the center pillar and top of Pastiage.
For the pillar:
Roll a piece of pastiage out to about 1/4" thick and wrap it around a rolling pin. Place your roling pin suspended on both sides by something that will keep it from flattenning your pastiage.

For the top: again roll and cut some more pastiage and use a pot cover to give it shape and allow it to dry. make sure you use plenty of cornstarch on the pot cover so it won't stick.

When both pieces are dry sand lightly and decorate you can glue top and pillar with hot glue gun. Then just insert your pillar into the cake. You can take a look at my pics for the carousel I made. I would do the horses different though.
It's the sturdiest construction ever!!
HTH

I used 2 small styrofoam cake dummies stuck together for the pillar in the middle of my carousel with a dowel right through the middle. I covered it in coloured ribbon and found it really sturdy.

I also agreed to make one before I had a clue how to do it! After the panic settled it wasn't too bad icon_smile.gif

I'm sure there are a lot better ways to do this, but what worked for me is using the middle cardboard of the kitchen paper towel roll, cut it down to the height I want, fill it with RKT and then use a dowel in the middle to stick it to the cake (double purpose too as the same dowel was used for added support to the two tiers of cake).

When I made mine for the fair a couple of years ago, I used the fountain set up........ that way I was SURE it would be sturdy enough to hold everything......... I had the horses on a turn table, so I didn't want to take any chances of it coming undone........ that little puppy rotated for TWO DAYS at the fair before it finally gave up ! LOL!

Hi I know this is probably very cheeky of me but would it be possible to send me your scanned instructions on the carousel cake please to [email protected]   what i was originally going to do was ...bottom cake with 4" circle cut out the middle to put 2 4" round dummies in (decorated with fondant etc of course lol) then add 6 wooden decorated dowels for the horses to go on running through the cake and helping the top tier (the roof) to sit on..so it will be sitting on the middle dummies, and 6 wooden dowels (does this make sense lol)  xx hope it works but hoping your instructions could help me along the way..thank you ..jean xx
