Hi! I am new to this website and new to making fondant cakes.

I have a really fun idea. I am making a diaper cake for my friend made out of designer burpies. The bottom and top tiers will be black with the white damask pattern, and baby pink in the middle.

I want to make a matching fondant cake.

So here is my question. How do I get a white damask pattern onto my black fondant, and then how do I get that onto a round cake without smudging it? Do I do the design once the fondant is already on the cake or do I do the design on the fondant and then put the fondant on the cake?

Would you use dust on a stencil or would you do cutouts?

I appreciate ANY information icon_smile.gif Thanks so much guys!!

I've only done cookies - but... I would get a stencil - line it up on the already fondant covered cake - then spread royal icing over the stencil.

I do a lot of Damask. I always do cutouts.

Good luck if you decide to stencil.

I've stenciled damask before using royal icing. It is a little time consuming, and messy, but turns out really neat. It is a lot faster for me to do that than to try to cut out a bunch of damask pieces from fondant to place on a cake - now if I had a Cricut - that would be different!!! icon_smile.gif

Stenciling is nice, but in a flat surface. If I'm going to do the damask in the sides of a round cake, I prefer to do cutout.

On a round/curved surface I just use painter's tape (on fondant of course!) and it's really not that hard as long as you make sure the stencil is nice and flat.

I have done damask a couple of times and what I do is covered all my cakes in whatever color it needs to be in your case black then you could either do cutouts, go online find a pattern then cut out the shapes then cut those shapes out of gumpaste, or get a stencil and use an airbrush machine with bright white americolor or royal icing while the stencil is on the side of the cake, hope this helps!

I have been wondering, can you use a stamp to put a damask pattern on fondant with a clear stamp? Has anyone tried this? I've seen stamping in a few websites. I wouldn't dare try white paint on black, was thinking of other colors on white. Was just getting ready to experiment with some cake dummies. This would help me out before, I find myself wanting to rip my hair out. LOL
Thanks,
Hammy

Yes, Disney does it all the time to get the mouse head/ears imprint on their cakes.

I do stamping on cakes and I have a damask stencil which I have used on a round cake, it was a lot easier than I expected it to be.

Ok, Im really interested in this .....I would love to do this....techinque, I tried it with my "rachel cake" and it came out ok, but at the same time "bad"....I have it in my photos. But I had read that it could be done using BC icing as the filler for the stencil, so I did make it thinner, still not good.

So how can I do this using RI? and make it look awesome?...and instead of a sheet of stencil design, Am I reading its best to use one design piece at a time?

Where have you gotten the damask stencils at? The only place I've seen them is online and they're around $80. Also what consistency of RI do you use?

When you say cut outs.....do you mean youa re cutting design out if gumpaste and attaching it to the cake?

I would love to do Damask, like I said....I find whatever sturdy stencils I can in crafts at Hobby Lobby and Michaels....

I finally did my first good stencil on a cake yesterday on BC!!!! Im so happy!!!! I did it with BC, just thinned it.

Its my last cake posted here. I want to try and do it from RI now....need to know the consistancy of it though.....

Hi Leah

I know we are all busy and I might not be the only one requesting something from you.... but if you are able to can you please let me know....when you do the damask... do you use cutters for the cutouts? can u tell me where you got them? or do you cut them free-hand?

if possible... can you show some pics of your damask work?
I'm doing a bridal show and I need to make 2 additional dummy cakes... and would love to do a damask design on one of them....

Thanks in advance....
