Makins Clay Extruder- What Am I Doing Wrong
Decorating By SweetVictoria Updated 1 Mar 2010 , 9:10pm by SweetVictoria
I sure hope someone can help me. I have a Makins extruder that I have been using without a hitch. But now it won't extrude anything without rough edges. I purchaced another one but still turning out a rough edged product. I have greased, nuked and am out of ideas. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do to solve it? I'm wondering if I should go to a different type extruder? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you CC'ers!
Work more shortening into the fondant or gumpaste until it is very soft (much softer than you would use for covering a cake or modeling).
I find that you also need to be very careful about cleaning the inside of the tube and the disks, too.
One speck of hardened fondant and it will lead to magnified tears in the extrusion.

I also make sure to grease the disk itself also. Your fondant needs to be pretty soft too.
I am in agreement, you need to add more shortning to your fondant/gumpaste. It will seem like a lot, but you need it to be super soft to extrude nicely.
i gave up trying to get MMF through the makins w/o rough edges ... i did find that a gelatin-based fondant w/ some tylose, warmed a little, worked really well w/o any extra shortening.
