I was telling a friend about the baby shower cake I just made. It turned out so cute and I was proud. She was just standing there looking at me like "I don't give a crap". icon_mad.gif She soon left after that story. I said to myself, "fine, I'll just go hang out with my friends on Cake Central. At least they really care." So, Thank You my CC friends for having a great passion for cakes the way I do!! icon_biggrin.gif

What a chuckle. icon_lol.gif I've bored many a friend with cake tales. Yes, CC is much more receptive to our cake stories, success and failures.

Kinda funny, my guy will say excited "Hey I won this great baseball card of XYZ for us to sell, do you want to see it it's really cool/nice? I smile and say "no that's OK"....I know I'm bad but I really could care less even if that one card pays for our vacation (and sometimes does), why do I need to look at it? He deals in high end sports memorabilia from sports auctions....When I mention cake stuff, he's only really interested when it's time to eat it.

I do that with cars. Everyone in my family knows what I'm like with cars. I do not give a rat's patooty what they look like. Does it start in the mornig and will it get me there? is all I need to know.

Ergo, I do NOT understand the fascination with "sit in my new car!" Ok.... so I sit there. now what? icon_confused.gif Taking a ride in one? No, thanks. THey all ride the same to me. I am NOT impressed by cars. Period. So I refuse to sit in one, ride in one (for the sake of "ride in my new car!") or ooh-ahh over one.

They all have 4 wheels and an engine. Big deal.

Cakes? Whole different story! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Oh, man, I'm the same with cars. As long as it goes "vroom" when I turn the key and it gets me to and from work, I just couldn't care less. I used to wash my car about twice a year whether it needed it or not. Drives my DH crazy. He thinks it's embarrassing - I think it's a small SUV and it's supposed to have mud on it. That's why I don't own a sports car. I can't live up to the expectations!

I do keep the inside super clean to transport cakes. My DH did convince me that I should wash the outside, too, because people might think it's kind of sketchy when my dirty little electric blue RAV shows up with their cake in it. I decided he had a point...

Ruth, I hear ya on the washing the car thing. Hey, it rains here periodically, and that washes the car just fine! My idea of a "formal" car wash is turning the hose on it when the kids want to play in the water on a hot day.

But ..... once I got the van lettered, I had to wash it once in awhile for appearances. Man, I just HATED spending $8 to wash a stupid car! (So I'd wait until hubby bought a book of car washes and I'd just take one of his.) icon_rolleyes.gif

I am the same way when my husband starts talking fishing. I like to fish but, he likes to Fish.
We now have an agreement:
I don't complain when he buys fishing stuff, and he dosen't complain when I buy my cake toys. icon_biggrin.gif

It works.

My husband has a new hobby, he is into brewing beer, he talks about it constantly, recipes, hops, grains, on and on and on. My eyes glaze over sometimes, but I always try to act like i'm really excited for him. I guess its like baking, he is trying new recipes, he even has a brew club that he has joined. They have so much fun, talking beer, and tasting everyones brews. I wish there was a cake club, now that would be fun. I have learned after being married for so long, that its really important to appreciate his interests, like he does mine, if he only knew how boring it gets, but he will never know how I really feel, lol.

I don't even get the look anymore. He just looks at me (after I've finished!) and says "there's 20 seconds of my life I'll never get back."

But now he understands how I have felt all these years when he talks about his magic/mentalism! icon_smile.gif

I agree with all the comments about the co-workers and dh and have chosen to let "the look" work to my advantage. icon_biggrin.gif There is a lady I work with that, well, let's just say we don't go shopping on the weekends together. I can tell by her behavior that she detests my cakes and my stories about them. So, I show her all my pics and tell her all my stories....often. It's great!!!! icon_twisted.gif

Your hubby is halarious. I know someone else like that but not mine. He just gets that look that I know his mind is somewhere else.

I HATE it when I say "you didn't hear a word I said did you?" and when he's able to repeat back what I said...I hate it, I KNOW he wasn't listening..haha..sometimes he doesn't get it right though and then I really gloat.

Well you know what they say say about 'Paybacks are hell" . . . .

My DH worked in an factory for 15+ years making electrical wire -- and he never could understand WHY I could not comprehend what he was talking about when he described how this machine took the copper, sent it through the whatever, then twisted it, then, then then then . . . and all he got back from me was the blank stare . . .

and it's the same thing with his hunting too . . . .

now he works for the Hwy Dept and at least I can understand and comprehend the majority of what he does there . . . .

But because of DH and a few other friends' that I have listened to their boring tales through the years -- I really try not to mention my cakes to anyone unless asked something specific or responding to a compliment, and I truly try not to go on and on and on . . . . I do NOT want to become 'one of those friends!".

I don't tell my friends much about cakes. I like it to be a mystery!! Sometimes one friend (a guy) will hang around and watch, but that's it. And he's learned to shut up and let me do my thing without his "helpful" advice!

my husband has an obsession with Tivo... i swear when we first got it, it was like having a mistress in the house! we get out of bed at 5.30am at our place and i would hear him talking to it, saying stuff like "oh youre clever, you knew i wanted to record that" and that stupid bloop bloop sound tivo makes, i was ready to box it up and take it back to the store

i prattle on all the time about alot of different stuff and although hes not really listening he has an amazing knack of instant recall so if i know he's switched off i will ask "youre not listening, what did i just say?" and he will repeat it word for word

My husband actually is a great storyteller - after many people asked him to write a book, he and I are working on one...so much of his life has been truly fascinating, HOWEVER... what does he talk non-stop about? The latest techno-gadget. The Iphone, the Ipod, the Ipad .... and.. Idon'tcare! I do try to appear interested while drifting off to my "happy place. oh, and do you think he'd at least be interested in the one piece of tech equipment I want - Cricket? nope... if they only made a cake cricket that downloaded music and played dvds...

I've learned to just shut up about it - better that than to have my feelings hurt when people just don't care!
I no longer gabble on about cakes to my DH, but I will sometimes say, "come look at this pretty cake I just made" (really just fishing for compliments! haha)
Or sometimes on here or flickr I'll call him over to look at a really great cake that I know he'll like.

I never mention cakes to friends unless they specifically ask, and then I keep it brief! I know how boring it is to try to be interested in other people's passions when you don't share it.

Funny! LOL...I get really excited about my cake art as well and I'm also so proud of myself when I've seen a technique here on cake central or somewhere else and I'm able to copy it so perfectly...my husband looks for a second gives me a nonchalant that's real nice babe and then asks, "where are the scraps?" and heads for the ice cream and his man cave with the big screen tv...LOL...I would complain but he's otherwise very supportive and encouraging. DHs are funny!

So far, this being a really new hobby of mine, my dh encourages me (as long as I keep up on the essencials). One night, after a really hard day with "life", I was especially down. He was trying to cheer me up and asked if I'd like do do something fun with him. And I asked, "Do you want to look at cakes with me?" And although I could hear the slight sigh in his voice, he said "sure" and sat and looked at cakes with me for 20 minutes. He even let me comment on them and say what I wanted to learn, etc, etc.

Yes, that was a historic, wonderful night! =)

Oh, and as for that "look"? I get it all of the time from my sister in laws. So I just keep my enjoyment to myself. =)
