did you see the food network's birthday cake challenge this past week? one person did stripes by putting down tape in stripes, then they were going to airbrush the whole thing, then pull up tape and have nice lines (of course the airbrush broke so they ended up painting the spaces left by the tape instead).

so i was thinking you might be able to do that for this? do it one way first, let it dry, then put down the tape the other direction. the problems i forsee is if the second tape will pull off the color from the first application. you will have to experiment with that...

but this idea of doing it should probably get results close to how it looks on the plate you show here - the intersections are a little darker than the stripes themselves...

I don't know how to airbrush the sides, but I have done a cake to look like this one before. I did a basketweave on the sides with tip 10 and pink and white stripes. I put a wavey border to simulate the pink one on the plate, turned out really cute. Of course I did it before I was taking pictures of my cakes, sorry!

Do you think you might be able to locate a stencil made with the checks? If so, you could always airbrush it with that or the food color spray.

maybe you could do an edible image of gingham checked fabric in pink and white and then apply it to the cake? I've seen that done somewhere, but can't remember....it was on cookies, I think. They were just letter/initial cookies iced with royal and then the "Gingham" applied to it....hmmm....I might wanna try it!! lol HTH icon_smile.gif

I have no clue how to do that but thought it was kind of funnyto see that photo because someone just asked me to do this exact same pattern for her child. Actually, both the girl and boy versions of it. Be sure to post your cake when it's done. I'd love to see it.

Seems like the easiest way (other than edible image) would be a stencil. The pattern would be alternating stripes going one direction, spray. Then just turn the stencil 90 degrees and spray again. Voila. I knew watching Debbie Travis so much would pay off!

Well, you can purchase a mylar stencil for checkerboards at a paint and wallpaper store. Or you could use something like this sink mat I bought at the dollar store, you would likely need to cut out the sqaure in the centre of each box, but this would work. You could use the food spray or the airbrush. Every second square in the mat is already cut out.
