My first wedding cake on Saturday...(I've been posting tons of questions...sorry). They want white fondant, black ribbon and pearls around the bottom. My problem is, the bead/pearl maker I bought is horrible (I discovered last night)..it has little defects in it that make my pearls come out with indents all over it.

I thought about buying the wired pearls or the Wilton pearls to put around the base of the cake with the ribbons...would that work? or should I use individual sugar pearls or royal icing? I'm also afraid of anything making the black ribbon bleed?

Any advice??

if the wilton pearls are what comes up on google, they look small. you could maybe pick up a check necklace or something to make the look at a craft store.
id be getting cranking out the hand made balls of fondant, or seeing if a local supplier has a bead maker.

This may get to you too late to help, but I make pearls by hand all the time (haven't been able to get a mold yet), and they look pretty good, although they're really time consuming. I use an extruder to make a string with the tip that has the largest round hole in the set. Then I cut the string into small pieces of the same size (sometimes I eyeball it and sometimes I use a ruler to mark off the pieces). Then I roll each one into a pearl-sized ball. Before they dry, I brush them with whatever luster dust I'm using (although I made some yesterday that dried before I could dust them, so now I'm about to find out how they look after I paint them with luster dust and everclear). I then attach them one by one with water or RI. HTH.

I make mine by hand as well. I'm not crazy about the molded look,they look all squished together and not as if they are strung on a string.
I roll a rope out to the thickness I want my pearl and then cut it in equal size and roll from there.
If they are small I can roll one in each hand at the same time and cut my time in half. Big ones require both hands.
Then let them dry for a few minutes and roll them in a smooth bottom bowl with some luster dust.

You could purchase a string, cut to your measurements, from the sewing notions in the fabric section and attach with icing.

thank you. I do have a string of pearls that I purchased from the fabric store. I think that would work the best as you have to take the ribbon off anyways.
