Third Place Ribbon...just Had To Share
Decorating By southernbelle Updated 30 Aug 2005 , 2:19pm by marv
Just had to share my 3rd place ribbon with everyone here at CC. This was my first ever entry into anything!
The piano cake (posted) is not what I envisoned when I started but it turned out ok. Didn't find out that I won anything until we went to the fair. And there it was........with a ribbon! Pretty cool.
Thanks to everyone here for all the help in getting my fondant black!
Congratulations!! I think it is great that you entered a cake and then to get a ribbon is the 'icing on the cake'!
Cindy
That's great! Your cake looked fantastic. I was thinking about entering a cake into our county fair, but i'm not sure if they have a catergory for that.
I also live in TN. A town called Manchester, about 25 miles southeast of the Boro'.

Thanks everyone. This site has been an inspiration to me. I have finally found my passion in cake decorating.
angelcake4u, did you mean Murfreesboro? We were just there today just cruzing around. I live in Lebanon about 30 miles NE of Nashville.
Yes, I meant Murfreesboro. Do you know of any cake supplies stores around Murfreesboro, besides Hobby Lobby. The little store in my town sometimes does not have what I am looking for?
Angela
Do you have a Jo Ann's? I know how you feel, Lebanon doesn't have much to offer either. I have to go to Madison or Hermitage.
I know there is a great store in Brentwood, never been as we just moved here about 3 months ago. And Brentwood is further for you. I order a lot on line. Country Kitchen SweetArt is a great site and has just about everything...they also don't tax. That is great since our tax rate is sooooooo high.
We do not have Joann's. I'll have to check out Country Kitchen SweetArt.
No tax sounds great to me!
Congratulations SouthernBelle your cake is fantastic and you deserved to win. You did such a great job on it.

Congratulations! Your cake looks great! I'll find out how I did with my cakes tomorrow when I get to the fair!
Debbie
Well done. I'm entering a village fete tomorrow. The only class was for a cake decorated in buttercream (not common over here) so I'm hoping to wow them with my first ever BCT of Winnie the Pooh. This technique is unheard of in England so I'm hoping I'll have the edge over the opposition
Congratulaions Angela. I almost went to the Wilson Co. fair. Would have been funny to see your cake and then realize I'd seen it on this site.
Just an FYI, Wilton says some Ace and True Value hardware stores carry Wilton supplies. I'm in Murfreesboro and haven't had time to check out those two stores yet but you may check yours if you have them. Also, our Walmart has a limited supply of colors, tips and pans.
Well, I picked up my cake today and my ribbon from the fair.
I have a question..........I did the piano and the notes from Wilton fondant. The cake was covered in mmf with buttercream underneath. The border was done in black royal icing.
When I got there to pick up my cake, the piano and notes were "melting" They kept everything in a really cold fridge so my question is "why would the fondant melt like that if it was cold?
Luckily the judging was last Thurday and the melting didn't happen until after Wednesday I know because I saw it Wednesday and it looked fine.
How strange...........I could undestand chocolate.......but fondant? I am hoping some of you may have the answer.
I am not sure belle except to say that once a wedding cake of mine covered in fondant was inadvertently put in a cooler at a hotel wedding reception. When it was brought out it began to sweat immediately...and almost melt as you said. I dont know the exact reason...but let it suffice to say that I make sure that my fondant cakes dont get chilled.
Hi Cakemaker,
How did your State Fair cakes do ?? You said you'd find out today...I'm anxious
Wow, congratulations, great job!
Fondant items don't do well on buttercream for too long, they start to absorb the grease. If your marshmallow fondant was rolled thin and placed on buttercream, after a few days, usually 2-3 or so, it will break down from the grease in the buttercream. Also, fondant doesn't like to be refridgerated and tends to slime out due to condensation and humidity. So those were likely the two culprits.

mahal ~ we won! both my son and i! i took all 3 of my divisions and he took both of his. there were 20 entries in his decorated chocolate chip cookie class! we're taking his entry for his decorated cupcake down tonite. thanks for asking!
Debbie
btw - my fondant melted on all three of my cakes at the fair. i took pictures of the cakes with the ribbons on them. i will post them as soon as they are developed and you can see how horrible they look now!
thanks squirrelly cakes! I never thought of the buttercream underneath and the grease.......oh well it looked good for the judges and that's all that counts
Congats to you as well thecakemaker, great job, can't wait to see the pictures. Next year, no fondant for the fair cake
Thanks southernbelle! My cakes were the only fondant cakes at both the county and the state fairs last year and this year. The judges must like it though.
