I have been asked to do a cupcake cake and this is a first for me. I attempted to steer them towards cupcakes with toppers, LOL, but they really want a cupcake cake. Is there a tutorial or thread that discusses this?

BTW, I'm talking about the pull apart cupcake cakes. I keep getting cakes that look like cupcakes on my search!
I'm looking for the same thing and getting the same results as you. I was also hoping someone would mention what icing they use when making one of these "cupcake cakes". I need something that will be easy to spread over them, but hold its shape once it's done.

I needed mine for this weekend, so I tried it on my own. I was pleased with the result. This is how I did it: I got my cakeboard and icings ready before I started. Then I took the time to arrange the un-iced cupcakes in the shape I wanted. After I got them all where I needed them, I filled a pastry bag with buttercream and just picked each cupcake up, placed a small dime size dot of icing on the bottom of the paper liner and placed it right back where I got it from. I did this with each cupcake until they were all "glued" in place on the cakeboard. I figured this would help them not to shift when I was spreading the icing over them and when transporting in the car.
Then I filled my pastry bag with the icing I was using over the top and fitted it with one of my larger star tips. If you have one of those super big pastry bags and "icer" tips, that would work great! I outlined my shape and then filled it all in with icing. Using a spatula, I spread the icing around, waited a few minutes for it to crust and did the VIVA method to smooth it. After that I just decorated as I would a regular cake. Sorry didn't take step-by-step photos, but hopefully this will help.
Thanks for posting your response. I am slightly horrified to do a cupcake cake, but it's what the girl wants. Ha! I'm so glad you told how you did it as mine has to be done in the morning but with cream cheese icing, so I hope it works out well.

I've made a couple, and I did pretty much what sweetooth did. The only differences were I used tiny glue dots to hold the cupcakes on the board, and I just frosted with a spatula...very carefully.

I have several cupcake cake cakes in my photos - a large bunny, a cigar shaped cake and one with several superheroes on it. I try and start in a circular pattern with one cupcake in the middle and build out. They should be placed so the next row falls in between 2 cupcakes from the previous row. I try and make it conform to the shape I need, then I use a dot of royal icing on the bottom of the outside cupcakes to hold it all in place. Hope this helps.
