how do I achieve the wood grain look that I see on the wine barrel cakes and the little duck baby shower cakes?

I cut my slats from fondant and make lines like woodgrain with a toothpick. Then paint them with brown wilton gel color and vanilla mixed.

thanks, also, is there a trick to get the panels to stay up once they're applied to the cake?
