I've done this once before. I used a flat paintbrush (about 3/4" wide, used with my cake work only) to pick up the leaf and then lay it on the fondant. I then used the paintbrush to lightly "push" it on the detail where I wanted, and then with lighter, longer strokes across the piece I removed the extra leaf. It's really hard to explain, and I probably didn't do the best job. The main thing was that the stiff dry paint brush really worked well for me.
