For Thomas I cut out a grey fondant circle (used a circle cutter) then made two indentations where his eyes would go. Flip the fondant circle over and make a pear shape out of fondant for the nose and two fondant balls for each cheek. Lightly press them in on the upside down side. Turn the face back over and press down....you will have a nose and cheeks! Then I took white fondant and made two circles for the eyes and black fondant with two smaller circles and attached. Then placed them where I made the indentations for the eyes. For the mouth, I cut out an opening and replaced the opening with white fondant. I used black for the eyebrows.
attach face to front of train
Hope that helps!
you can see my photos for reference
Thank you everyone!!!
This will help me greatly!!!
I will say...I was hoping to find the "Debbie Brown" book with Thomas on it...but can't seem to find one I can buy.
Does anyone have that book...that could send me the instructions on how to make the whole thing????
Go to www.ecookbooks.com. That is where I ordered mine, I paid less than $8 USD, and they shipped it to Canada (at an extra cost of course)! You should get it much quicker!
Good luck!
Okay, just tried the link above and it didn't work for me however the site does exist. You can also do a search on Amazon.com for books by Debbie Brown and the one you are looking for is "Favourite Character Cakes"
I have three Debbie Brown books and there isn't a Thomas the Tank Engine in either one.
I don't much care for the fondant face when the rest of the train is buttercream! It just looks too weird to me and a little scary! I built my face up with buttercream.

This is just another idea! Do what ever works for you!

I found the instructions to make the face easy, but when i looked at how they made the train portion, I said forget it and used the 3D Wilton train pan. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&member_id=10249&cat=0&pos=0
