Hello CC'ers, I got a request for this exact cake, the bride sent me the picture so I don't really know the originator and I'ld appreciate a little insight into how the gold patterns were made. I'm not sure if its painted or stencilled or something else. Thanks guys!!!!

I could be wrong here but this looks handpainted to me. You can mix lemon extract with edible metallic dust to do the gold designs (I've done this in the past and it works well). I'd probably also mix gel or airbrush coloring with some lemon extract for the black outlines. HTH

It's just handpainted. I do stuff like that a lot. Just haven't done such dramatic dark colors. Gold highlighter dust, NOT luster dust, and straight Americolor black for the outline areas.

the whole thing appears to be airbrushed with a pearl airbrush spray as well!

wow, even though i've never stenciled a cake i get the idea of how to do it, I also do henna, this look's like it might be for an india cake theme. if you go to the henna page they have a on line book with these patterns you can download, and maybe make a stencil or just hold the pattern up to the cake the balance is astounding, putting your cut out parts togeather it's so perfect i think it's a airbrush stencil, or done by someone very trained in henna designs.

I am pretty certain the cake was airbrushed with the purple sheen and it was handpainted after that.

I looked up the copyright holder's name and came to their Flickr photostream - they describe the method as:

"this cake has irredescent purple fondant icing with gold adornments. The pattern was stencilled then fine-tuned with hand painting and black outlining. Simple fresh orchids placed asymmetrically complete the display."

I don't understand. You don't know the originator? Doesn't the watermark say where it originated?

Ok guys so I finally got to try my hand at the design and this was what I came up with icon_lol.gif .Thank you all for the very helpful insights,Jamie thumbs_up.gif for the pointer on using highlighter dust which I did. I used purple edible glitter on the purple fondant instead of luster for a slightly different effect, I improvised the design on the middle tier and all in all the bride was VERY pleased.Thank you all sooo much you are all appreciated- Ninatat, neecakes your PMs are highly appreciated too thumbs_up.gif , God bless you.

This is a wonderful example of using inspiration from another artist to create an entirely original work of art. In the OP, you said the bride wanted the exact cake. But you did something much more demanding and creative -- so your bride ended up with something that was all hers, too. Absolutely gorgeous work!

Congratulations on this elegant and exquisite work of art!! It is superb! I am so happy for you!

And thank you for posting this picture in your original message. I would hate to have been deprived of seeing this beauty had it gone straight to the gallery. I might have missed it when it appeared on the home page.

Thank you so much everyone for the compliments, it is so much appreciated. The wedding was awesome and best of all I got wedding cake orders based on this same design but in different colours and even when I tried to show each bride-to-be other different designs the three different brides were bent on this particular design icon_lol.gif and to think I was actually terrified to do the purple cake with major concerns about colouring that amount of fondant deep purple till I discovered edible purple powder colours and then the actual stencilling itself.
