I'm soooooo tired of people asking me to do cakes to serve like 200 guest ( for like banquets and things like that) but they don't want to pay for them? I mean do they really think they are going to get a cake to feed 200 people for under $100??????? Not from me they won't!
I guess I'm just getting tired of these people who expect me to make a cake for $0.50 per serving! icon_mad.gif

You're not alone, I get that all the time too. I usually refer them to Costco or Walmart.

people have a really hard time believing cake can be as expensive as it is, even i was one of them, before i made cakes, i was so shocked at the price of my wedding cake (which in turn made me think, ha i bet i can do that, and cheaper ), Turns out i could do it, for my self cheaper, but i wouldnt want to , people just see it as 'cake' and not time and effort.

I had a lady that wanted a cake for her daughters 2 year birthday. She wanted a Valentines cake(2 12" hearts touching with the sweetheart look and text). she only needed enough cake for 30 people but wanted the bigger design)-it looks nicer to her. She also wanted more expensive fillings. I gave her a price of $2.50 a serving(buttercream). Didn't charge for the time to decorate(she is a friend) and was throwing in some fondant decorations for free. I quoted her the price for the number of servings those two cakes serve and she wanted to know why I was charging her that when she only had 30 guests to serve. She thought I should only charge the $2.50 a servings for her 30 guests not for the larger cakes and extra servings she wanted.

Yes- I only need a 1 carat diamond, but I like the look better of the 6 carat, so i only should be charged for the 1 carat, the other carats should be freeicon_smile.gif Seriously...what are people thinking!!!

Yep, I get those too! I try to post my minimum prices on my website to avoid getting these requests but sometimes they slip through. Referring them to Costco is a good way to get rid of them. Keep in mind not everyone that reaches out to you will be in your target market....how are you advertising? If it's on Craigslist then you shouldn't expect any other type of request.

"Hello, KFC? I'd like a bucket of chicken. Now I only ACTUALLY need chicken for 4, but I want the bucket so it looks like I went all out, so you're only going to charge me for the 4 pieces and not the whole bucket of 16 pieces, right?"

Yeah.....THAT'LL work! dunce.gif

LOL, never had any experiences with Craigslist. I advertise cakes for all occasions (and I do them for anything......but not for free! LOL) The thing is I stay booked every week.... and I'm not booking a sheet cake for less than what it's really worth when I could book a tier cake and make 2x the money for the same time... if that makes sense??? I don't even like to do sheet cakes, they're just not for me. Not knocking anyone who does them, but I need to be mentally stimulated LOL..and a plain ole sheet cake just doesn't keep me interested. Plus, I could turn them down and book a tier cake and make so much more money and have fun too.

It just kills me, one was for a highschool band banquet. She wanted enough cake to feed 200 guest, but had a budget of $150.00. No matter how many times I did the math and tried to make myself do it....I just can't do it! Not even for a sheet cake with edible images.

It makes me just want to ask them, "What part of your body did you pull that figure out of?" icon_confused.gif

I know Indydebi!!! I just can't understand it.....I'm not sure what the going price for a costco or walmart cake is, but I would think it would be pretty hard to get cakes from them on that budget!

This is where you say "I'm sorry, but it's just not possible to do that."

The only way you can provide dessert for 200 ravenous teenagers for $150 is to get four of those 10-lb chocolate bars and hack 'em up.

(the chocolate bars, NOT the teenagers)
