Hi Everyone!

I recently made a wedding cake for my Pastor's daughter. I searched this website for instructions for making hydrangeas, and I couldn't find them. So, I'm posting for others who may be in need of instructions.

1. Purchase hydrangea cutters to cut your gumpaste flowers (I recommend buying them from Scott Woolley. He's so helpful!!!) I also purchased the hydrangea veiner for a more realistic look.

2. I used a Silpat (silicone) mat to work on. I coated it with Crisco on one half to prevent sticking.

3. Color gumpaste as desired (directions are in gumpaste package.) Roll gumpaste out thinly. Press veiner into rolled out gumpaste, remove. Line up hydrangea cutter over "veiner impression." Cut one or two flowers at a time, they dry quickly. (roll excess gumpaste into a ball and recover while you work with your cut-out flowers)

4. Lay hydrangeas onto a foam mat (see picture) and using ball tool...roll along the edges of each petal, making a nice thin edge. Roll the ball tool towards the center when doing this.

5. Lay hydrangeas into an empty egg carton to dry. Allow hydrangeas to dry on different edges of the egg carton to give the flowers different, more realistic, shapes.

6. After the flowers have dried, paint them with luster dust. I painted mine with pinks, and yellows, and greens. Unfortunately, you can't see the colors in the pictures...but they were really pretty. (Follow the same procedure for leaves)

7. For the center of the hydrangea, I just put a dot of royal icing.

8. To attach to the cake, I rolled gumpaste to about the size of a tennis ball. Then, I sat that on top of the cake...and attached the hydrangeas all over it, with royal icing.

*** If you want to put wire in your flowers, you'll need to do that BEFORE the gumpaste dries, or it will break! (ask me how I know! hahahaha)

I hope this helps!
Tracey

i found this tutorial on you tube on hydrangeas, it uses the 5 petal cutter..she then removed 1 petal to make it just 4 & adjusted remaining petals to make it look equally distanced from each other..i gave it a try but it just won't work for me...the "adjusting" tears the gumpaste away...any ideas how to do this ....help pls icon_sad.gif

thanks,

We bought Nick Lodge's DVD on Hydrangea and Sunflowers...He has a collection of DVDs that goes from production to wiring to coloring...Worth every penny and his staff is quick to get items out.

Just wanted to add that Scott Clark Woolley has wonderful cutters and veiners on his site. He also has some free directions that include hydrangeas. I also order the mold for the hydrangea centers from him. Plus, he couldn't be more lovely to work with.

The instructions:

The cutters:

The veiners and center mold:
