DITTO THAT!! I don't own any of those pieces, so I can easily turn them down on that basis without having to say they're just too ugly to make. There's a decorator in town who does them so I refer those requests to her.

P.S. Leah, I love your avatar! Great pic.

No kidding. No one should ingest that much red food coloring. Red Velvet is my least favorite flavor. I refer to it as "chocolate cake that can't make a commitment" because it just doesn't taste like anything to me (except red food coloring). I've never understood the magic myself. The only reason to eat it is for the cream cheese icing.

I don't do naughty cakes. Not because I am offended or anything (I would do it on a personal level for a friend if they asked, as long as they did NOT tell anyone it was from my biz), it's just not the image i want my business to project. I also do not do sheet cakes, fountains, plastic staircases lined with miniature bridesmaids, realistic babies, pregnant bellies or any other limbless torso... generally I don't do any cake that i don't like... if I can design a cake that the client is happy with but doesn't make me feel like I sold my soul to costco, then I am happy, but I have NO problem turning down a job for something I don't find appealing and I am not comfortable putting my name on, no matter how well I might be able to execute the design in question.

No body parts here.

I am in a very large metro area. I worked in a bakery that did them. The requests just got more strange as the word-of-mouth spread. I vowed if I ever had a store that I would not get started in that line...never regretted the decision.

a family member of my bf's who I'm not very close with requested me to make her a pot leaf cake and I'm trying to decided if I'm comfortable with it or not-so I get the hesitation. I'm thinking even though its not something I'm into doing (the weed that is) I will probably go ahead and make it-and think of it as any other themed cake where the theme is something I'm not into.
I also get the creeps thinking of cutting into a baby, torso, or other 'body part' cake, but once its out of my hands I don't have to think about it...or see it being chopped up! LOL

I do red velvet, but I cut the amount of food coloring in half and STILL cringe when I mix it in. Blargh!

icon_lol.gif It does look like you're bleeding over the mixing bowl!

im going to attempt to make my first red velvet next week... thanks for the warning

I make red velvet without the coloring... it's good... mild cocoa flavor for those who are looking for sumthin' different. I call it the not-so-red red velvet... icon_wink.gif.

I don't make sheetcakes or cakes with plastic stairs or anything tacky like that. I have yet to be asked to make a "naughty" cake... and I am not sure where I'd draw the line. Nothing explicit like royal icing spooge or anything... but a boob cake... not so bad I suppose. If you are cool with it... who cares right? icon_biggrin.gif

RV cake is nasty. I so do NOT understand all the hype around RV. I have tried many different recipes hoping to find 'the one', and they're all just gross. If they're not gross then they're just blaaa.

i have to say i was one of those "say no to redvelvet cake". but after i tried many receipes and tweak them to suite my taste, it is the most requested cake i get from family/friends/co-workers.
people who have either never tried it or have had terrible redvelvet cakes are amazed how good it is.
i have to admit i do miss the old standards choc/vanilla/wasc/carrot cakes etc. but i love redvelvet too.
one of the best things about redvelvet is its very sturdy, and can hold up to alot of decorations.
but that is off topic-anyways i would probably never say to no to anything unless i felt it was a moral issue that would offend others. i would never want a cake to offend anyone.
cake, to me, should be an enjoyable experience in every way.

Ruth that is hysterical! I have to say I love red velvet, CakeMan Raven is the best. Skip the cream cheese, just give me the cake.

BTW- I won't make boring cake. I'd make a boob, over a sheet cake any day. "Hello, I'm looking for a colorful sheet cake for a ........."..(YawN).."Or just a simple cake with blah blah blah......." Sorry, I just tune out after that.

I will make any type of cake the client wants. EXCEPT.. for those nasty character cakes !!! I made ONE once and will never do it again. Bring on the RV.. bring on the most raunchiest naughty cake.. just please whatever you do... dont ask me to do a character cake !!! icon_lol.gif

icon_surprised.gif there is one thing that i ask the clients NOT to do when i make a naughty cake.. I ask them NOT to bring a photo in of their partners body parts and ask if I model the cake from it. I just cant stop laughing long enough to get the cake iced when they do that !! icon_lol.gif

I make all my cakes at home, so my kids see almost everything I do. I would absolutely say no to a "naughty" cake or any cake with a theme that I don't want my children to see. I don't see a problem with telling someone, "I'm sorry, but I don't make that type of cake." Just because you sell cakes, doesn't mean you are required to have the customer dictate what you do and do not offer. You choose what you sell, they choose whether or not what you sell fits their needs.

The ones I've seen are really well done and very realistic! icon_lol.gif

i enjoy doing naughty cakes, i think there a bit of a fun and if thats what the person wants, then thats fine, as long as the cake is going to an adult, then only cake ive ever refused to do was a play boy bunny for an 8 year old girls birthday, i dont imagine the girl actually knew what the playboy symbol stood for, but for me, it was out of the question

OMGosh! I'm just cracking up over that "chocolate cake that can't make a commitment"...LOL...I've always thought of it that way! LOL! Unfortunately it's my oldest daughters favorite so I have to make it at least once a year. She's not fond of chocolate so that's as far as she will go..tho' to be honest with you, if not her, I put in chocolate pudding to make it a bit more chocolate!LOL!

Thank you SO much everyone who responded to this post...I feel so much better about this. I do tend to start to feel that if they have honored me with their business then I should do whatever they want and feel badly when I don't want to do it. Thing is, when I do cave and do the cake, I am never ever happy with the results and don't use the photos for business anyways. I have a baby shower coming up and the mom to be is leaning towards a belly cake, according to her mother, and I'm SOOOO trying to push the carousel instead so I don't have to turn down the business. At least this way, I'll feel much better about doing so!

Thank you!

Cat

I actually had a request for a Swastika cake. It was for someone's BF who was dressing up as Hitler for Halloween which was also his birthday. I could have got really good money for the cake as it was short notice but I could not morally make that cake.

I also won't do nude, lingerie yes, nude no.

I won't do toilet bowls, dog bowls, litter boxes, poo piles, anatomy or animals of any sort.

However, I am making an edible piece of male anatomy in a few weeks. My best friend is getting divorced - her ex cheated on her 5 times in 2 years. The cake is a certain shape, and she is getting a meat cleaver to cut it. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
