Ok I have been looking into getting a edible image printer and while I was doing that I came across the Cricut express. I'm more likely to add fondant/gumpaste peices to my cake than an edible image. My question is with the Cricut how does it work with the Fondant? Any information will help me make a decision. I would only use the printer a few times a year i hear thats not good for them not to be used often. The cricut I would use more frequently i like to add little touches to my cakes...Any suggestions would be of a great help

You can use fondant with the cricut if you add tylose to it. I just got my cricut so I haven't played with it much yet. I only use my printer a few times a year and don't have any problems with it. I do try to print something on it at least once a month on paper just to keep the ink flowing. I have an epson and absolutely love it. I've read a lot of stories about the canon's continuously clogging so I spted for the epson.

thanks Tiggy2 you have cleared up the confusion for me. I have found several Epsons and they are not as expensive as I thought they would be so I think thats what i will probably get and try to find and inexpensive cricut somewhere. Can you tell me why you have to have tylose in the fondant to use it in the cricket? Why cant it be be fondant with gumtex or gumpaste mixed with it?

You can use it with a gumpaste/fondant mix. I find this the easiest to work with. You can also use fondant with gumtex added, I have never tried it but I know you can.

I just did my first cake using only the Cricut Expression to cut out the fondant..it's in my album on here, with the green apples on it. I used satin ice fondant with Gumtex in it and it worked fine. I set my blade depth at 5 or 6 and the pressure and speed somewhere in the middle. You DO need to also get the deep cut housing and blade to cut it though. The only other adjustments you need to make are you need to move the rollers to either side(2 to each side) so they don't roll over the fondant..and you need to wash off all the stickiness off of the mat. Don't know if you heard but Provo Craft recently announced that they are coming out withthe Cricut Cake..which can be used to cut out gumpaste...so you might want to wait for that if you are going to be using it for cake decorating only. I like my expression as I have a separate mat and blade set that I use for paper. The only "Cake" products i will likely buy are the cartridges and the mats, which don't have the adhesive that the expression mats do. You can go to youtube to see a video of the Cricut Cake in action...it IS quite pretty I must say..but I LOVE my Pink Cricut Expression!

As for the edible printer thing..my local grocery store will print out images for me at $10 each for an 8 1/2 x 11.

I was searching around for the cricut expression video on you tube to see how people use it with cakes I came across this woman showing a new cricut machine its called the Cricut cake machine its made specifically for cake decorating starting price is 399.00 but its all FDA approved. It says its coming soon has anybody heard of this product yet or when soon is?
