Use vodka and gold luster dust. You need the clear liquior to get it to dry.

I use lemon extract, which does the same thing as vodka. I mix it into a small plastic bowl until the consistency is kind of like a thick paint. Make sure it is smooth and not grainy before you apply it. Anything alcohol based dries out so you will have to add more vodka or extract when the mixture start to get a powdery look and texture. If you mess up on a spot, use the vodka or extract to remove it, let it dry a minute and then go back over it.

Pre-color the fondant itself close to the gold color you are looking for first. Then, when you paint it, as others have detailed above, you'll get a better look.

When painting with gold I use pink fondant and for silver I use blue underneath.

I'll have to try that. Do you have any photo examples of how that turns out?

I use a light brown fondant for gold and grey for silver. It tends to hide any spots that migh be lighter than other areas and gives me a nice deep base.

I use luster dust and vodka as well. I don't use extract because I don't want my fondant to taste like whichever extract I used.

Make sure you have good dusts. The first time I tried this, I used Wilton luster dusts, and the result was a mess. On a tip from someone on CC, I ordered some from Global Sugar Arts, and I haven't had any trouble since.

Hi Artscallion
The 3rd picture in my photos was Christmas baubles with golden bows. I prefer the 'dull' gold to the very shiney but I used pink fondant underneath. Whenever I have blue or pink fondant left over I make a lot of small rose leaves which I can then use on cupcakes and paint with gold or silver.
