How do I do this, see above. What's the best way to attach the fondant and what to attach it to (ie: wire, sucker stick, etc). Do you put a straw in the cake to keep it from tearing? Thanks.

Gumpaste will stay on wire better than fondant, but if you have a few days for it to dry, fondant will work too. You can use floral wire...it comes in silver, painted green, or cloth-covered white or green usually, and sometimes you can find other colors. The size of the wire is measured in gauges, with the larger numbers being the thinner wires. For example, I will use 18 gauge to make a stem for a rose because a rose is heavy and needs a thick wire, but I use 26 gauge to make individually wired petals or leaves that aren't heavy. You should buy a pair of needle nose pliers with a wire cutter too...cutting wire with kitchen shears is a great way to ruin a good pair of shears (guess how I know )

You can heat the end of the wire in a candle flame and then push it into the gumpaste or fondant, and the heat will melt the sugar enough to glue it on. You can also dip the end of the wire in gum glue or egg white and then push it into the gumpaste or fondant. I think heating the painted wire might cause undesirable fumes, so be careful, and also heating the fabric covered wire wouldn't work.

It's not safe to put wires directly into the cake. You can use straws or coffee stirs or hollow lollipop sticks (my favorite when I can find them). Some people dip them in chocolate but personally that doesn't seem like enough of a barrier between the wire and the cake, at least with the amount of coverage I managed when I tried it.

If I were making daisies like that, I'd probably make a small green ball and push a hooked wire into it, then put the flower cutout on top of it and push with the ball tool to indent the middle a bit and connect the two, but don't push too hard or the wire will poke through. Then add the yellow center. That would work with gumpaste because it dries fast enough that you could stand the flowers up and they'd hold their shape, but probably not fondant. If you want to use fondant, then I think the easiest way would be to cut a small circle the same color as the petals, push a wire into it, leave it laying flat and then put the petals and center on, then leave it laying flat until it's all the way dry. If you pick it up before the back is dry, the wire will tear through the fondant.
